CROIX STATION: | Manchester, April 30th.—M\r, Llovd George, addressing a liberal meeting, | said the uncertainty of making a liveli- | hood in which millions of workers find | themselves is mainly responsible for the | growth of socialism in Great Britain. | Quatlining what he conceived the liberal | programme to be, he declared that im- mediate attention should be given tothe | general status of the workers, adding | that no programme could be complete without proposal for wiping out the | great waste caused by alcohol. Refer- | ring to traffic protection he said he was | sure that when the present parliament | comes to an end the country woculd be | plunged into the greatest fight ever | known for the existence of free trade. |, Paris, April 30th.—It was annourced | by the French Olympic Committce to- | day that Australia and New Zeuand | have officially accepted the commitice’s | invitation to patticipate in the 1924 | games. Australia will be represented | by forty athletes and New Zealand by I fifty. Trading, however, was not verv active and the undertone was unsctiled. ‘lhe market for refined was quiet and prices | unchanged at 10.00 to 10.15 for fine gran- ulated. Refined futures were rominal. Paris, May Ist. —Up to noon today May Day in Paris seemed more iikely a leisurly celebration of the coming or Spring, than a day of demonstration against Capital- sm, or one devoted to the strikes origi- nally planned. Railway transportation in sowme districts, completely suspended for a period of days, has be2n hampered in many places in Maine and New Hamp- shire. Several mills in Lawrence and Lowell were forced to -close, through flooding of basements. Industries at Watervills and other Kennebee river points were beginning to return to nor- mal conditions. Washington, May Ist.—The announce- ment that the Govt. in thirty days will begin to vigorously enforce the law, us interpreted by the Supreme Court, to prohibit United States and foreign ships from ecarrying liquor within the three mile limit, was made tonight by Attor- ney General Daugherty. +~ London, May Ist.—Steamship officials immediately moved for collective action azainst the decision of the United States Supreme Court, barring liquor from foreign vessels within the American three miie limit., The various steam- ship officials are arranging a meeting for the earliest possible moment, to adopt a definite poliey. It is believed this meeting will be held in Liverpool within a few days. While there is no indication that the companies would dety the ruling, the meeting is expected to plan a common policy fer detending the rights of British interests. Officials ot the Cunard Line told a correspoudent today that the idea of unloading the liquor from their boats at the American three mile limit and then loading up agaln on tre return triv s impracticabie and Just a bit fantastic. Floaung store ships could be stationed outside thie three inile limit, but 1t would cost such a sum of money that the scheme probably wouid not prove profitable. IThere is aiso a re- vival of the taik of diverting trans-oceen- ic liners byway of Halifax and Canadian poris.
