UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION Purpose: To approve a Bachelors of Arts degree in Inclusive Early Childhood Education WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands is committed through its mission and Strategic Plan to support the intellectual and skills development of the Virgin Islands workforce and to create partnerships with the Virgin Islands Department of Education, and WHEREAS, Head Start has mandated nationally that 100 % of their managers and teaching staff must have a BA in Early Childhood Education by January 2006, and WHEREAS, Virgin Islands Head Start employees have been given until January 2008 to complete their BA degrees due to the local unavailability of the degree, and WHEREAS, best practices in early childhood education include training in inclusive practices, and WHEREAS, there are sufficient numbers of students currently pursuing either certificates or associate degrees in inclusive early childhood education to ensure that there is a minimum cohort of ten students ready to pursue this degree, and WHEREAS, there are adequate numbers o …

UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION Purpose: To approve a Bachelors of Arts degree in Inclusive Early Childhood Education WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands is committed through its mission and Strategic Plan to support the intellectual and skills development of the Virgin Islands workforce and to create partnerships with the Virgin Islands Department of Education, and WHEREAS, Head Start has mandated nationally that 100 % of their managers and teaching staff must have a BA in Early Childhood Education by January 2006, and WHEREAS, Virgin Islands Head Start employees have been given until January 2008 to complete their BA degrees due to the local unavailability of the degree, and WHEREAS, best practices in early childhood education include training in inclusive practices, and WHEREAS, there are sufficient numbers of students currently pursuing either certificates or associate degrees in inclusive early childhood education to ensure that there is a minimum cohort of ten students ready to pursue this degree, and WHEREAS, there are adequate numbers of full and part-time faculty qualified to teach the courses in this degree program, and WHEREAS, a minimum cohort of ten students is financially feasible and places no additional burden on the University, and WHEREAS, this program is affordable to students because Head Start pays the tuition of its employees who attend classes that would lead to the BA degree and the Department of Human Services makes funding available annually to students who operate child care centers, and WHEREAS, the faculty of the Division of Education approved this proposal on October 12, 2004, and WHEREAS, the Curriculum Committee approved this proposal on November 18, 2004, and WHEREAS, the faculty approved this proposal on December 2, 2005, and WHEREAS, the Cabinet approved this proposal on May 13, 2005, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees approves a Bachelor of Arts degree in Inclusive Early Childhood Education effective Fall 2005. This degree will be offered to cohorts of no less than ten students and future offerings of the degree program will be based on demand for the degree.
