Port-au-Prince |- Haith e ; : _ ! -~ Mr:;.-Daniel having decided he would ‘ spend the Christmas holidays with his family in the old home, took passage »n ¢ the Shippirg Board boat ‘’Lake Gunni,”” ~cfor ' Bt.: Thomas, via San Juan, Porto +Ri€o, ¢ i \ : - All went well until the night of the 28th ulto. when suddenly the alarm bells on board the ‘'Lake Gunni”’ summoned ‘all hands on deck.. . “Mr. Daniel rushed his family on deck ~~and found that almost without warning a . stormof some’ intensity had broken over ~"the ship ard "that in the impenpetrable darkness the ship had gone aground on the island of Tortugas, which is some © miles north of the mainland ofHaiti. ~ Qaptain Wheadon immediately radioed to* the special agent at .the. Shipping ‘Boari. at Havana asking that immediate assistance be sent him to assist in saving | his vessel. Meanwhile Captain Wheadon and his crew got busy and worked with such commendable zeal that the passengers felt greatly assured that all would yet end well. : : : : It was found necessary to jettison absut 600 tons of cargo and also 160 tons of fuel oil and about 40 tons of fresh water, , ‘ The ‘steamship ‘‘Haiti’”’arrived on the scene to render what assistance she eould but unfortunately her propeller “blades got caught in one of the hawsers ard | rendered her helpless until about two hours before the ‘‘Lake Gunni’’ got off. Just about half an hour before Captain Wheadon succeeded in getting off his ship, off the reef, the wrecking tug “*Willard”’ of the Merritt and Chapman Co., with a special agent on board ar- rived.
