UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS GLOBAL INSTITUTE FOR LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT (GILMD) SYLLABUS FOR SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL LEADERS COURSE Faculty Dr. Gabriel Ogunmokun - Global Business Environment and Planning Dr. Ronald Harrigan - Leadership Dr. Gilbert Sprauve - Culture and Communication Course Title: Developing Global Leaders Code: BUS 400 (for undergraduates) / BUS 540 (for graduates) Course Description: This is an intensive two-week course designed to equip participants with a broad knowledge and functional skills necessary to assume leadership and management roles in local and international environments that are being shaped by global forces of technology, commerce, and communication. Areas of study include global, regional, and micro-state economies; structures of local and international markets; local and international industries and infra-structures; characteristics and practice of effective leadership and management in a changing environment; local and international heritage; and basic communication in a cross-cultural setting. This leadership and management development course taught by a team of experts from a number of disciplines is suitable for students and workers in business, education, liberal arts, social science, nursing, science, mathematics, psychology, social sciences, tourism and hospitality, social work, public administration, communication, etc. Course Objectives: At the completion of the course, successful participants should be able to have: 1. A working knowledge of the strategic planning process in the local and international business environment 2. A working knowledge of leadership and management concepts and practices 3. Acquired cultural knowledge and communication awareness of skills necessary to function in a local and international environment 4. Developed a customized leadership prospectus which the participant can adapt in a local and global environment Outcome: Those who successfully complete the course receive 3.0 Credit Points at UVI and a Certificate in Global Leadership Development. Also, any participant who attends the “International Conference on Leadership, Management and Strategic Development” that GILMD is planning to organize will also receive a Certificate of Participation. Pre-Requisites: Junior, Senior, or Graduate level standing. (Note: A mature-aged person with substantial work experience can also apply for this course and qualify to be awarded the certificate upon the completion of the course but without receiving any credit points). Course Duration Hours: 55 hours (covering lectures, case studies, role plays, discussions, seminars, group work, extracurricular activities that include visitations to historical sites, social, cultural, political, governmental institutions and commercial centers).
