The pro ,rams of these tutorials vary from those designed to supplement the schools to those which view tutorials as an entree to the community. Ail tutorials consider their work a method of educating the volunteer to the problems of povrrty, many of them wonder about the extent to which the volunteer helps am_liorate them. In others, the accomplishment have been impressive. Some of the most exciting tutorials, my have been in contact with, include programs in the arts and community orga nizing often extend into community high schools and colleges. In spite of the mushrooming of tutorials throughout the United States, individual projects remain relatively isolated, each relying primarily on its own experiences and intuition to run its programs and formulate new ones. Tutorials have often been severely limited by the lack of communication with other proj'cts. It is our belief that a national directory of tutorial projects contributes to increase commu nication among tutorials, aid in regional coordination, and show the wide range and diversity of projects. In compiling this year's revision of the directory we relied primarily on questionnaires returned by project directors in the summer of 1967. Although TAC is confident of the data given, it was impossible to verify every item submitted. In addition, some aspects of the programs, particularly project size insofar as number of tutees and ' tutors may have changed considerably since this last summer. Project listings with name and address only have been culled from our mailing list. We were thus unable to include the supplementary data. Since TAC's program this coming year will probably not include the compilation of the directory, we advise tutorials interested in what others are doing to get in touch with other programs in their areas immediately. Programs are notorious for changes in personnel and addresses even within the course of one year. The topical indices at the end of the book may help you decide whom to contact. ft Priscilla Elwell Publications Coordinator Tutorial Assistance Center Washington, D.C. 20008 February, 1968 1.
