The Evangelistic Meetings. Under the direction of Mr. George F. Tibbitts the meetings in the Lutheran and Moravian Churches are a splendid success, With full chorus singing and pungent’ appeals the hearts of all are reached. Thursday Evening at 7 o’clock an oven air meeting will be held at the Band Stend. Perpular and stirring songs will be sung by a large Choir. Following this an after meeting will be held at the Lutheran Chureh. On Friday Evening the last meeting for this week will be at the Moravian Church. : ST. CROIX SCHOOL ATTENDANCE REPORT No. 24. The festivities of yesterday in celebra- tion of Washington’s Birthday were at- tended with favorable weather ,and con tributed to the entertainment of a large gathering which thronged the wharf and surrounding grounds from noon until after 6p. m. A complete resume of the proceedings is promised for publication, and as time does not permit for further remarks this morning, readers are re- ferred to the coming report. The S. S. The boxing contest in the theatre last nicht was pretty well attended. Washington, | Feb. 17th.—President Hardineg informed Congress today i.: considered a general sales tax the only feasible method of raising funds for « soldier’s bonus. ; Stockholm, Feb., 16th.—Some eight steamships are frozen in the ice in the Kattegat and the Sound and ave drifting around. Seme of them are in imminent peril of being crushed. Latest revorts from the Sound are to the effeet that nine United States steamers, of from 500 so 6, 000 tons each, laden with food for the fa- mine stricken Russians, ar2 adrift in the ice. The ice pressure is increasing. Fly- ing machines are to be used in an attempt to convey food to the ships, some o! which have bzen held fast by the ice for iwo weeks. Three vessels have {cundered on the Swedish coast, since the ice blockade set in. New York, Feb. 16th.—Pneumonia cases reported to the Health Department today numbered 348, compared with 292 yesterday, while influenza decreas-d to 564 new ~ases, against yesterday’s report of 808. Eighty deaths from pneumonia and 21 from influenza were reported. Since January first there have been 16,959 cases of influenza here 378 deaths. Pneu- monia caused the death of 2,212 of 6,157 persons it attacked this year. London, Feb 16th. —The influenza epi- demiec in France is practically over says a Reuter despateh from Paris. There are now only 44 sufferers frcm the disease in Paris hospitals, compared with 900 cases only a few days ago. : New York, Feb. 16th. -Howling fron some point in the jecean offCape Hatteras an icy gale struck New York tonight sending the mercury toward zero and bombarding shr nking pedestrains with hard driven peileis of snow. As a palliative, however, it gave assur- ance that the peak of the wind storm of 56 miles per hour had passed. New York, February 16th.——Further strength in the Canadian exchange to- day made Canadian doliar worth 96.43 cents, the highest price in over 2 years. One year ago Canadian dollars were sell- ing at 12 per cent discount While strength in sterling exchange is thought to have been primarily responsible for todays increase in the value of Canadian money, financial authorities attritute the steady recovery of the Canadian dollav mainly to the excellent trade conditions of the deminion.” Expansion in Canada’s trade while exports from the Unitcd States to the Dominion have been de- clining sharply, seems to be the boest ex- planation for the improvement in Uana dian currency in the Newyork 'money market. : L.ondon, Feb 17th.-—-The bill establish- ing the Irish Free State passed its second reading in the House of Commons today after the amendment offered by Captain - Charles €raig, leader of the Ulster Uni- onists, for aliering the boundavy con;- missions provisions of the Anglo-Irish treaty had been defeated by a vote ol 304 to 60.
