During these difficult | times the company has spent hundreds | of dollars in chartering vessels, steam- | ers, etc., in carrying messages beween t the islands, and no effort has been spared | to reduce impediments to traffic to the minimum. When itis remembered that some criticism has lately been advanced | concerning the company’s work in this | island, it is gratifying to learn the facts | herein set forth, and when it 1s borne in ! mind that this coinpany has served our | territory to advantage for generations, | the reasons for certain present defects | in the service may safely be accepted as | genuine and we trust, as the superinten- dent hopes, that the repairs will all soon be completed and conditions be so im- proved as to permit the resumption of work on a normal basis. INSTANT, | on which oceasion the School Board, the staff of five teachers, and 81 pupils were present. The programme which opened l with the song ‘‘America’’, and saluting | of the flag, consisted of an introductory address by the principal of the school, Miss I. Neville, an address by the chair- man of the School Board, Mr. R. W. Skeoch in whose unavoidable absence a few words were said on his bebhalf by | Mr. B. R. Larsen, secretary; games, for which prizes were awarded, contributing immensely to making the afternoon a very pleasant one to the participants, the chil- dren in general, and the teachers and oth- er grownups present. When this last mentioned item of the programme was dispcsed of, refreshments were served, and ifanybody failed to appre- ciate the ices and other nice things it was certainly not the little ones who kept a happy chorus throughout this tangible feature of enjoyment. Then followed the distribution of prizes, for the games of the afternoon, and the school work according to grade and degree. Mr. A. R. Mc Intosh, one of the School Board, distributed the prizes, making appropriate remarks in this con- nection. The song “‘Jolly Boys’’ was here sung and the National Anthem brought a very agreeable function to an ~ end. Below are published the names of ~the pupils to whom prizes were awarded: ~ the grade in which they are, and the { percentage ot marks they attained. The prizes were weil chosen and included ' many valuable articles, useful, and of interest to the children, such as fountain pens, kodaks, thermos bottles, etc., etec. Edna Stridirén Ist N% Wilhelm Klint gnd 91 % Enid Martin 3rd 89 % To all accounts tie St. Croix Higher School, better known as the Richmond School, now located in N0.33-35 Strand St., - town, 1s making good progress, and forg- ing ahead nicely. This school now has a roll of some 84 pupils, and five teach- ers; until now has maintained 8 grades two of which will be dropg2d upon the opening of the new schooi term when it is also contemplated to adopt the name ’ of the St. Croix Graded Grammar ~ School. It being arranged that the De- - partment of Education will establish a ~ Bchool to accomodate pupils of the 7th. and Bth. grades the pupils in those grades of the St. Croix Higher School will go over "~ new school. At »--ant there are g in th grade. Th ; school 48 with t) nality, the pecuniary activities of the school are not confined to such limita- tions as formerly threatened its very existence. In this connection much ecre- dit is due the board of directors, and the treasurer, Mr. Julius Petersen, who has handled matters very skilfully and shown much practical interest in the af- fairs of the school work. The premises now occupied by the school are like- wise in accordance with other efforts along progressive lines, the quar ters being large and airy, and equip- ped with facilities not alone for aec- tual school requirements bit alsv for the comfort of the children during recess and playtime. The staff of teachers are all experienced people ac- customed to deal with children, and striet diseipline, one of the most essen- tial assets in pedagogy, is religiously enforced. Itis believed that with pro- per support this institution offers all the advantages of a good preparatory school. OFFICIAL NEWS. June 28, 1920. The U. 8. 8. Beaufort arrived at St. Thomas last evening Ensign Charles W. Fox, Supply Corps, U. 8. Navy has been ordered from the receiving ship at Philadelphia to report to the Governor of the Virgin Islainds for duty. He will temporarily relieve Lieut. Walter T. Cronin, Supply Corps, U. S. Navy as Supply Officer of the Na- val Station while Lieut. Cronin is on leave of absence in the State. Lieutenant (j. g.) Willilam Wynn, Medical Corps, U. S. Navy has been or- dered from New Orleans to duty in the Virgin Islands. Lieutenant Roger A. Nolan Medical Corps, U. S. Navy has been ordered from the U. S. S. Chewing to duty in the Virgin Islands. Ensign Seth F. H. lagerstadt, U. S. N. has been ordered from the receiving ship at New York to duty on subchaser No. 62 as the relief of Ellis C. Newell, U. S. Navy. Ensign John Schroeder,U. S. N. had been transferred from subchaser No. 62 to subchaser No. 72 as the relief of Ensign J. Smith, U. S. N.
