Thompson to take charge of the Agricultural Experimen- tal Station, St. Croix, by request of Gov- ernor Kittelle he Secretary of / gri- cul ure who takes great interest in the Virgin Islands has selected a man of wide expevrience. Mr. Thompson has served for a long period in Florida, has been in charge of the station at Manila and was in charge of the sua- tion at Guam for six years and was also stationed in Hawaii for two years, Mr. Thompson is a graduate of the Agricultural college of Kansas and he has had experience in fruit growing in California. The Secretary has acceded to the request of Governor Kittelle and. will, as soon as practicable, establish demonstratation farm on St. Thomas and ' St. John to teach the people how to raise ~ vegetables and fruits for local and home consumption. EDITORIAL. News has been recz2ived here of the dea‘h of Mr. A. M. Colbeth at his home in Richmond Hill, L. 1., on the night of the 27th. ultimo, as a result of a sudden attack of heart failure. The deceased is well known in _this is- land where he resided for years and conducted mercantile business for Mes- srs. Batram Brothers, and for his own account. He leaves a wife, four sons and two daughters to whom and others bereaved by his death we extend cur sincere condolences and sympathy. We have information that Mr. R, Bau- mann. K. A narrow escape from drowning is re- ported from Frederiksted where one Rob- ert Richards was seized with a heart at- tack while bathing in the sea near La Grange on Saturday morning and sank to the bottom where he lay for about 5 minutes and was then rescued by Mr. R. H. A. Tihe man was taken to the bhospital and revived after some hours. A large mail was received by the Mys- tery via Frederiksted on Saturday. The Guiana is expected to arrive at Frederiksted tomorrow mcrning and lis advised as sailing ‘for New York via St. Thomas in the evening. Mails close here at 3 p. m. tomorrow. There was a lively meeting of the Colonial Couneil” on Saturday at which all the members and the Government Secretary were present. A SUCCESSFUL BABY :SHOW. The baby show at the Muunicipal Hos- pital yesterday was largely attended and was also graced by the presence of His Excelleney the, Governor and Mrs. and Miss Kittelle. Seven proud mdthers recived prizes for their little ones, who were: May George, isme Aletia Turner, Randolph E. Sallivan, Adams Oiliver Emanuej, Roy Ariington Wallace, Iris Vanterpool and Bernard Alphonso Ludvig. The first five prizes were in money, but the two last consisted of two beauti- fui posters painted by Miss Kittelle and which were recently on exhibition at the Past Odfice. ’ During the show sweei music was dis coursed by ithe Naval Band, which along witii cooling refreshments, and the sight of happy, healthy banyhood, added much to make the afternoon an enjoyzbie one. TELEGRAMS. ST CRUIX STATION. Dublin, Aug. 4th.—A full meeting of the Irish Rz2vublican Parliament is to be called. The official announcement of the ecail, with the date for the meeting, will be published in tonight’s issue of the Irish bulletin. It is reported the reply of Ulster to overtures by the Sinn Fein has been received and is not favour- abile. : Belfast, Aug. 4th.—The Ulster _abin- et met this morning for a short session at the close of which there was no com- munication, issued as to the subject of its deliberations. It was authoritatively learned, however, that no message {rom De Valera has yet reached the northern cabinet. t.ondon, Aug. 4th. —Keports published here that the Governmert of northern [reiand has definitely and finally retused to have anvthing to do with the Govt. proposals relative to peace in lreland, were today officiaily declared to be ‘‘ah solutely unfounded’’. It was asserte- that no proposals had been submitted to the Ulster cabinet by the Government. London, Aug. 4th.—The Prince of Wales may be in Canada. again in April of next year. Tne Daily Mail states that His Roya! Highness tour of India will conclude to Karachi on March 17cth, 1922, when ithe Pricce and his party wiil re- turn home via Japan and probably via Canada. : Pittsburg, Aug. 4th.—Tennis experts of- the British Isles and Australia today played the first of their peliminary rounds in the Davis matches on the grass courts of the Allegha)y Country Club, ten miles from Pittsburg. A fashion- able gathering filled the stands erecred at the courts for the matches, and ineiuded ten~is enthusiasts from all parts of the middle West and Canada.
