The St. Croix racers to participate in the Whit Races in St. Thomas went over by the Vigilant yesterday. The theatre was as usual the attrac- tion last night, and we hear only praise of the current serial which has taken well. The official proceedings of the C)uncil’s meeting of yesterday will appear tomor- row, and it is therefore inexpedient to furnisha summary of it today, except that it may be mentioned that the amend- ment to the Food Ordinance introduced at the previous meeting by 2nd. elected member for Christiansted. Canegata, was rejected when put to the vote. This result was forecasted and is not surpris- ing under the circumstances. With reference to prices being affected by the drop in the rate of exchange, it is reported to this office that certain prices have positively been increased up- on pretext of fresh lots of goods being dearer ete., and it is noted that these in- creases are in exact provortion to the advanced value of the money. With the Food Commission as helpless as it is, and at best fixing prices oniy upon what are considered munecessities we are at the mercy of the jugglers. We glean, and venture to mention it as a piece of news the public is sure to wel- come, tha' information is to hand that beginning July Ist. there will be twice a week power boat mail service from San Juan, P. R. via St Thomas to Christian- sted. This is indeed very gratifying and warrants the expectation of a good mail service in the Virgin Islands. OFFICIAL NEWS. . May 8, 1920. General John J. Pershing, U. S. Army, and his Staff, arrived in St. Thomas on the U. S. Army Transport ‘‘Northern Pacific’’ at 8 a.m. yesterday. He landed at Kings Wharf immediately, and was met by Governor Oman and his staff and was paid the usual Military honors. Honorable ‘Ambrore E. B. Stephens, Member of Congress from Ohio, and Mrs. Stephens; Honorable Felix C. Da- vila, Commissioner to Congress from Porto Rico, and Mrs. Davila; and Miss Lafevra, sister of the Presidentof Pan- ama, were also in General Pershings par- ty. After a short automobile trip to “Tutu’’ estate and then to the West end of town ??\ere General Pershing and Governor Oman visited the George Wash- ington School. The distinguished ' visit- ors called upon Mrs. Oman at Govern- mer.t House and met several of the offi- cers and wives, They then returned to their ship which sailed for San Juan shortly after 10 a. m. The Governor will today forward to the Colonial Council for the Municipality of St. Thomas and St. John the appoint- ment of a first appointed member, vice Mr. Valdemar A. M ller, resigned. The U. S. S. Kittery is expected to arrive in St. Thomas today. TELEGRAMS grnl ST. CROIX STAIIION. ““{Delayed in transmission.) Berlin, April 23rd.—Germany will arnounce before May 10th the amount she will be able to pay as part of her indemnity to the Allies. The Finance Minister has not yet definitely indicated the sum. . Paris May Ist.—Notwithstanding the strikes, calm prevailed in Paris and all over France to-day. Being Satur- day and a half holiday, the staffs of the greater number of commercial and industrial estabiishments had decided to close. The auto-bus and tramsway services were running partially and the afternoon transport facilities were al- most normal, thanks to volunteers who presented themselves in such numbers that the companies were compelled to refuse the assistance of a certain num- ber. The water, gas, electricity, postal and telegraphs services were performed normally. With regard to the strike of railway workers, it was remarked that notwithstanding the .coincidence of the first of May, there were few idlers among those employed on the passenger and freight trains, they being mor® numerous among those in the work. shops, although notably fewer than dur- ing the last strike. The movement may therefore be said to have failed and at the close of the day a further inprove- ment took place in the railway and other transportation facilities Advi- ces from the province state that order prevails everywhere, the number of strikers being fewer than last Year, es- peciaily in the mining districts, where work continued without interruption.
