STATISTICAL DIGEST 1998 United States Virgin Islands EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Issued September 2000 FOREWORD Some years ago, representatives of statistical offices of the Insular Areas of the United States met at a meeting at the East West Center. It was then suggested that each of the areas should begin a series of statistical yearbooks for its respective area. At the consistent urging of Dr. Michael Levin of the Population Division of the Bureau of the Census, we are finally able to produce such a document. This publication has only been made possible throughout the sub- stantial support of the Office of Insular Affairs, Department of the Interior, particularly with the assistance of its director, Allen Stayman, and economist Richard Miller. In this second effort, we have aspired to compile a comprehensive set of statistical tables cov- ering such topics as population, vital statistics, education, labor force and employment, house- hold and personal income, crime, tourism, housing, motor vehicles, finance and revenue and budget. We hope that this will meet many of the needs of the local public and nonpublic sec- tors, as well as federal officials and off-island businessmen who constantly use these data. We also urge users of this document to share with us their comments on how we might im- prove the usefulness of the publication in the subsequent series. Frank L.
