Going through the amendments of the Municipal Com mitte2 Ifind that this department hLas had a big slash. Why it i 3 done, [ do .not know. Tomy mind the Eduecation Department is on 2 of the rmost inportant Departments on the island. It is taking care of our childrenard giving them an eduecation. Irwould like to knpw why it was given such a slash ? 2nd Member for Christiansted Tc vn [Canegata]: It was given the sdme amount as last year. Ssth Appointed Member (Me Iniosh) con- tinuing: The schools are short of teaeh- e's and itis proposed to aucment the staffs of ilie schools. We bhad a private school and that was elosed as a result of Government refusing to grant it a sub- sidv, -and the children had to attend the Publie Schools, thereby inereasing the number on the rolls of those schools and consequently the work of the teaching staffs. This, the Muricipal Committee had not taken into consideration at the time they made the amendment, or, lam sure they would not have done so. 1 was given to understand that there are fifty to sixty pupils under one teacher. I sent to the Assistant Director to inquire the reason of this and he teld me that he had not sufficient money to employ more teachers, but he was hoping that the Comnci! would, in the new fiscal year, allow more money to get the teachers nceded. We look to the Eduecation De- partment for the edueation of our ehild- ren, and it is elear that this depariment must have the money to carry on the work. [ move therefore that the amoun:s as originatly budgetted by the Educa- tional Derariment be voted for, and in view of the fact that it is one of the most important of the Departments that this Coun=i! shall give this matier its favorable econsideration. 2nd Meinber for Christiansted Town [Cancgatal: Mr. Vice-Cheirman. I have 10 Inlention whatever to discuss the merits ot the Honciable sth Appointed Member’s speech. 1 have as good a knowledce of education as he. As |1 teld you we budgetted just what was spent by that depurtment last year. 1f thais smount i~ not sufficient for the proper working of the department the Director of Education may come to the Council with an additional money bill andI am sure that the Council (including the Hon- orable sth Appointed Member) wiit vo'e for it. As regards Maintenance, if the Honor- able Member wiil leok at the budget he wili see thut this depariment has agot re- ceived a single cent less than last year.
