From ali parts of the West Indies there have been coatinuous compiaints of the disappointing weather conditions during the year,~~nd of the probable erop shortage that is almost sure to en- sue. According to the Journal of the Jamarca Agricultural Society, April and May 1920. the dry weather has given an especially heavy blow to the iocal production of food crops in the island. Special efforts have been made in Jamaica toward a large extension of the area pianted in local food crops, and i~ is stated that never for several years has more efforts been made to plant sach crops exiensively than in the spring of this vear. Food crops, especiaily corn and peas, were planted on a large scale by many proprietors who had never done so before, and, generally speaking, * everyone who wasin the habit of cul- tivating food crops planted still more. Unfortunately the expected rains did notjcome, and the result has beer that all crops have suffered very :badly. In fact, most of the corn and peas, of which there was such extensive planting as with a good season would have made Jamaica independent of any importa tion of such articles, have been burned out. Taking the island all -round, it is computed that 80 per cent. of .all corn, peas, and beans planted from February ,to April will yield nothing. Yams, which appear:to be the most important food crop in Jamaica next to corn, have experienceda severe set + back; a large proportion of the plants have been also so burned out that they cannot revive.
