He recalled the fact that in nineteen-fourteen he gave a pledge that Ireland should have one Parjiament, and declared that he ad- hered to that view now, He disagreed with those who believed there could be no constitutional changes until ord~r was restored, and asserted that the root of the trouble could not be srrived at until there was a wide reform in the Government system. The substitution of the Bill for the measure on the sta- tute books, he continued, took from the Irish people what the majority of them wanted, in one form or another, and attemp-ed to forece on them something the great majority disliked, and wculd always refuse to accept, and he advo- cated the amending of the nine- teen-fourteen Home Rule Act, and the enlargening of the powers of the Irish Parlian.ent and Executive so as to give them to all intents and purposas the status of a Domirion. He furth- er declared that he still favoured ‘‘Coun- ty Option for Ulster’”’”, whereupon Sir Bdward Carson asked the speaker if he favoured ‘‘County Option’”™so the Souch of Ireland. Mr. Asquith answer- ed in the affirmative. “‘Then we can have a Sinn Fein Country,” retorted Sir Edward. Mr. Lloyd George changed his plans for entering the debate decid- ing to reply tomorrow to Mr. Asquith’s attack upon the Bill. .r. Bonar Law foll'wed Mr. Asquith in *today’s dcbate, declaring that if the Liberal leader provosed to amend the existing law as ® indicated, his proposal ‘would ‘be con- demned unanimously by the represent- atives of Scuthern Ireland, as is the pre- sent Lill.
