175 THE COLLEGE'S MISSION (Board of Trustees Meeting, November 13, 1983) The College of the Virgin Islands is an accredited land-grant institution which has been established by the people of the Virgin Islands through the govern- ment to meet the needs for higher education in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. It seeks to be of service to this area jn much the same capacity as state colleges and universities serve their states and regions on the mainland. Instruction at the College is enhanced by its unique setting in the Virgin Islands’ and the Caribbean. While founded on the established traditions of American higher education, the College seeks to accommodate these traditions to the location” and cultural background which characterize the Virgin Islands and other islands of the Caribbean. The College offers a wide range of baccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, teacher education, and other professional fields. …

175 THE COLLEGE'S MISSION (Board of Trustees Meeting, November 13, 1983) The College of the Virgin Islands is an accredited land-grant institution which has been established by the people of the Virgin Islands through the govern- ment to meet the needs for higher education in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. It seeks to be of service to this area jn much the same capacity as state colleges and universities serve their states and regions on the mainland. Instruction at the College is enhanced by its unique setting in the Virgin Islands’ and the Caribbean. While founded on the established traditions of American higher education, the College seeks to accommodate these traditions to the location” and cultural background which characterize the Virgin Islands and other islands of the Caribbean. The College offers a wide range of baccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, teacher education, and other professional fields. It also offers programs at the associate degree level, designed to prepare students for occupations in which there are critical personnel needs. In addition, the College offers the master's degree in selected academic areas. Also emphasized are programs of continuing education, locally relevant research, communi ty-oriented services and assistance to elementary and secondary education. As a land-grant institution, the College operates the Virgin Islands Agricultural Experiment Station which seeks solutions to local’ and regional problems through basic - -and..applied research.
