And they are coming to UVI’s Sports and Fitness Cen- ter. The 2005 World Champion San Anto- nio Spurs will hold their 2005 training camp at the Sports and Fitness Center from Oct. 3-7. The Spurs will be the first NBA team to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands. “We’ve always thought about holding training camp in the Virgin Islands,” said Spurs General Manager RC Buford. “It certainly is some- thing that is very important to Tim Duncan. But we really think it’ll be a great experi- ence for the entire team. Although practices will be closed to the public, there will be a scrimmage game at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, that will be open to the public. The scrimmage is free but only a limited number of tickets are available. One hundred tickets were provided for UVI students and will be distributed be- tween both campuses. On the St. Thomas campus, students who wish to attend regis- tered and a lottery was held at September Fest on Sept. 22. St. Croix campus students who want a chance to attend should com- plete an entry form available on level 100, next to the bulletin board in Evans Center. A limited number of tickets are also available for UVI employees. Winners will be selected via a lottery. Faculty and staff who wish to attend the scrimmage should complete an entry form located in the of- fice of the Campus Executive Administra- tor on the St. Thomas campus, Quarters B, or the Business Office on the St. Croix cam- Hal Edwards was looking forward to his junior year at Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. But a few weeks into the semester Hurricane Katrina slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast and brought Edwards an experience he prob- ably won’t forget. After riding out the storm in a dormitory designated by the school’s administration, he found himself trapped inside for nearly a week. Flood waters rose around the campus, flooding buildings and dormitories, trapping Edwards and about 100 others in that dorm. He used the word “frustrating” to describe his feelings those days after the storm in the dorm. “I was just thinking about getting out of there,” the Cru- cian said. On the Thursday after the storm, Edwards and the others were rescued by National Guardsmen via boat and taken to Baton Rouge. By the Friday he was on a plane back to the Virgin Islands. Edwards is one of six students who took up on UVI’s offer following the hurricane to enroll students who were displaced. Two of the students are enrolled on UVI’s St. Croix campus and four are enrolled on the St. Thomas campus. All of the students are from the Virgin Islands and were attend- ing universities in states along the Gulf Coast that were rav- aged by Hurricane Katrina. Michael Nissman, who attended Layola Univer- sity, left Louisiana for Florida a day before the hurricane struck, taking only a change of clothes and personal hygiene items. Nissman said what would normally be a two-hour drive to Destin, Fla., turned into a 10-hour road trip. “UVI has been very sympathetic to everything,” said Nissman, now enrolled on the St. Croix campus. “My initial plan was to stay here for one semester,” he said. “But now I’m not sure if I’m going back to Loyola.” Most of the students said that the hardest part of the transition is catching up in their classes. “I just hate being so far behind (in classes),” said Lateefah Lord, who was an Xavier sophomore. She had left the city for St. James, La, before the hurricane hit. Some of the students will attend UVI for one semester New Students Continued while their respective universities are being repaired. Others may opt to remain at UVI. Members of the community who would like to contribute monetary donations to the students who lost their belongings in Hurricane Katrina can call UVI’s Institutional Advance- ment Office at 693-1040 or make checks payable to the Uni- versity of the Virgin Islands and in the memo section indicate Hurricane Katrina Student Relief. Only full-time UVI em- ployees will be able to participate and employees can only complete one entry form. The employee and St. Croix student entry forms must be turned in by 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The drawing will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in room EC 401 on the St. Croix campus and in room B-110 on the St. Thomas campus. Winners will be determined by a random drawing from the total number of entries per campus. Each winner will receive one ticket and will be notified by telephone, fax or e-mail. Entrants do not have to be present to win. Faculty and staff who wish to view 15 minutes of the San Antonio Spurs’ closed practices next week must submit their name and preferred date and time on an index card, to Curtis Gilpin in the Athletics Office by 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3. Viewing will occur in the V.I.P. room on Wednesday, Oct. 5, be- tween 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. or Thursday, Oct. 6, between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. No phone calls will be accepted. Please monitor the UVI Announcements web page for full details. For the general public on St. Thomas, tickets will be given away via a lottery. People interested in obtaining tickets must register for a chance to win in the center court at Tutu Park Mall. The ticket drawing will be held in the mall at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2. On St. Croix, tickets for the scrimmage and a free, char- tered boat ride to St. Thomas will be given on a first-come first-served basis beginning at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Randall “Doc” James Racetrack. The boat will leave St. Croix at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 7. The boat will leave St. Thomas at 7 and 11 a.m. on Oct. 8, for St. Croix. Spurs Continued
