Statement of Philosophy Education is a cooperative process where we learn from each other. My job is to facilitate and direct the learning process. You must do the learning. While I am open to suggestions and modifications, it is my ultimate responsibility to establish, describe, monitor and judge the learning objectives of this class Classroom participation is important to the learning process. Everyone should come to class on-time, prepared and willing to participate in open discussion. You are encouraged to challenge and critically analyze the concepts, theories and/or opinions offered. As learning depends on unique abilities, motivation, expectations, interests and goals, I want to know what interests you. Office Hours Two hours before and after class. I am also available by appointment. You are encouraged to call or visit me during my office hours. Materials & Resources Text: New Perspectives on Computer Concepts: Complete Edition. Parsons, OJA. Course Technology. 1995. Two 3.5" DSHD 1.44 MB diskettes; a holding case is recommended. A resource notebook of computer notes and handouts. If you plan to do your work on a computer outside of UVI, please discuss it with me. Special Note This class involves the use of a variety of copyrighted computer applications. It is illegal to make copies of copyrighted computer applications. I have access to a variety educational discount programs. It is legal to keep files created and/or distributed in class. Grading Your grade is based on and your performance on tasks, class quizzes, tests and the final. Alternate tests are given only for medically approved absences or with my prior approval. If you are ill, you are expected to contact me or leave a message PRIOR to the examination time. All tests are multiple choice. The question pool is on reserve in the library. Quizzes focus on the current chapter. Tests include chapters discussed since the previous test. The final is cumulative. Tasks are usually not to be worked on during class time. Teamwork is encouraged as long as every team member learns the material. There is temptation to copy work or to accept Òtoo muchÓ assistance. If you are incapable of duplicating the work you hand in, you have accepted too much assistance. DO YOUR OWN WORK! You have one week after a task is assigned to hand in your work. Each task is graded on a 10 point scale. If you get less than a perfect score, you may redo the task as many times as necessary so as to correct any deficiencies.
