NJ 07662 Re: Tank Excavation Sample Data, Tutu Wells Site, St. Thomas, USVI Dear Mr. Danahy: This letter is in response to your inquiry of December 9, 1993 regarding our data from the Western Auto tank excavations conducted October 19 through October 22, 1993. The apparent discrepancies stemmed from the fact that changes were made to the analysis request after the samples and chain-of- custody had been submitted to the laboratory. Since the original chain-of- custody was included in each data report without any reference to the subsequent changes, it appeared that the report did not include all of the data. The attached chart should serve to clarify these changes. Also, we have included sample descriptions and a map indicating the location of each sample. …

All samples obtained by Blasland, Bouck & Lee were split with ENSR; however, ENSR's sample designations are not known to us. We hope this information is helpful to you. LLL Sample No. W 2042573 WS-2 Grab Water Sample Esso Tutu / 58101 Analysis: 4828 The GC Fingerprint for this sample indicates the presence of a mixture of petroleum distillates. The early eluting (more volatile) portion of the fingerprint is a pattern of peaks similar to the pattern for our gasoline reference standard. Differences in relative peak intensities and ratios suggest that the gasoline in the sample may be veathered. When ve calculate this distillate as gasoline, it is present at 200 mg/1 in the sample. The later eluting portion of the fingerprint is an area of unresolved peaks typical of our lubricating oil reference standards. The sample pattern is similar to the pattern for our 10 V 40 motor oil reference standard. When ve calculate this distillate as 10 V 40 motor oil, it is present at 1,400 mg/1 in the sample. Consider the quantitations approximations due to the differences between the sample pattern and those of our reference standards.
