I cannot discuss this matter technically. I understand that tha cost of operating the plant is so hizh that it eannot pay under th2 present franchise, unless Governm nt sees fit O have lights ail night. I feel that every taxpayger has the same right. 1 do not think ‘it right to light the two principal streets in this town and leave the rest in darkness. I understand that there is a memorial by the pzople of Christiansted asking for more lights., If that were true the people would have come to their representaiives and get tsem to ask for more lights for the town; but the three representatives have beer ionored. [ think this way: Rather than have two stree's lighted all nizht let us havo all the streets lizhted half of the night. If my knowledge of the facts is correct the number of lights on the streets at present is thirty. The Munici- pal Committez entered Into a contract to furnish Chris'iansted Town with more lichts and we have goi, upn o now. 'hirty- eight. There is aiready on the budget a large amount provided for lichting the town fclocks so that the peo- ple can see the time at night. 3rd Member for Christiansted Tawn (Alexander) remarked: Mr. Vice-Chair- man. 1 agree with my colleazue, the Honorable 2nd Mamber for Christiansted Town. I believe that an additional amount of SBOO for lighting the town of Christiansted for the entire nigat is exorbitant. Personally [ rfully agree that the towns shou!d be lighted all night, bat as the Honorable 2nd Member for Christiansted has said certain streets are hghted and others are not. He is perfectly right that every tax payer should have ejual right and ftheir proparties protecied. My chief objec- tion to the amendment is, he exorbitant amount asked for. According to the remarks of the Honorable 2ud Member for Frederiksted Country Distriet (Carey) it seems as if this increase is askeld for * the sole purpose of enabling the piunt to carry on. 1 consider that if we vute this monosy the consumers of electricity should Lo given some consideration in the rate. ond Men:ber for Frederiksted Coantry Distaict (Curry) remarked: Mr. Viee- Chairman. [ don’t b2lisve Government would have approved this amendment if it were a subsidy, because the American Government does not subsidize private corporations. 1 hardly agree that it would be possib'e to light more thaa two streets, the amount paid for street light- ing is not sufficient. The present system must be established before we can talk about inereasing the number ot lights. Ist Memter for Frederiksted Couantry District [Andersen] remarked: Mr. Vice-Chairmzn. |do not think that this amendment is in form so that Members can understand the real purpose of it. The Council” Members cannot see what it is for. The additional amounts grarted was placed on tlie budget and the additional lights asked for were necessary. 1wish the Hororable Mem-g ber to explain the necessity of the @ amounts called for in the amendment.
