Frequently this winter, the | bhotei has been forced to turn away ! guests particularly over the week-end ' and this is takern as an indication that . the Springs will be increasingly popular . irom year Lo year. } While these improvements have been | under consideration for a long time it | was impossible to make any definite de- ! cision regarding then until after a new lease was obtained on the property. The ‘ Porto Rico Hotels Corporation, which | operates the Hotel Condado Vanderbilt, | has been operatin ‘the Coamo Spring i Hotel-for three years or so, hut until | recently was not able to get a long lease | on the Spr ng property. With the sign- | ing of the new lease recently, defini.e | plans were made for improvements | which have long been under considera- | tion. ’ | At the same tirre it is understood that | plans are now b<ing considered for an | enlargement of tne Hotel Condado so . thatits accommodztions may be very much . extended. ‘'hese plans, however, have l not been definitelv formulated and it 1s ' probable that no definite decision will be ' reached unt | the close of its first sear of - operation. Extensive improvements at Coamo Springs ar: definitely planned by the Por- to Rico Hoteis Corporation, including the installation of electric lights in the pres- ent hotel building, running waier for the guest rooms and possibly an addition either o the present building or a seper- ate building for guests or possibly a group of cottages. Wells also are to be dug so that the hotel will be supplied with fresh water in addition to the medicinal waters of the springs. These improvements have been defin- itely determined u;on as a long time lease has been obtained on approximate- ly one hundred acres of land surrounding the present hotel property. The improve- ments in all probability will be complet- ed before the beginning of the next winter season. So far only rough sketches of the im- provements to be made have been com- pleted, but it is said that the company intends to preserve the present charae- ter of the springs and that whatever buildings are added will conform with the oid structure, which willbe exten- sively repaired. ; The improvements have been deter- mined upon in order to meet the increas- ing demand for accommodation at Coamo No. 63. Wednesday by United States Distriet Attorn y Martin who has had the sub- 4 i ject of reducing the price of sugar for local consumption up with t'e centrals for several weeks. At the ‘ime the Federal Grand Jury was in session some weeks ago. it is under- stood that the question of an investiga- tion into the cost of making sugar was under consideration as a part of the plan to reduce the cost of living. While no official statement has been made on the subject, it is understood that some of the centrals were very much disturbed over the possibility of having an investigation of their produc- tion costs and that the proposition to lower the price of sugar for local con- sumption was a compromise suggested and which was agreed to by most of the centrals and District Attorney' Martin. Until this week white sugar had been selling at retail at $0.20 per pound. By the new agreement with the centrals it Is expected that sugar for iocai consump- tion will be considerably reduced.—lbid.
