UNIVERSITY of the VIRGIN ISLANDS RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands is committed to improving the quality of public services that address the individual and societal needs of the region, including education on and awareness of the natural environment; and WHEREAS, the University has determined its mission requires it to provide facilities and opportunities for students and scientists to observe and study the terrestrial and marine tropical communities represented in the Virgin Islands; and WHEREAS, the University, through the Eastern Caribbean Center, operates a field station, now known as the Virgin Islands Ecological Research Station (VIERS), located within the Virgin Islands National Park at Lameshur Bay on St. John; and WHEREAS, V.I. National Park Service regulations have been developed which discourage research that involves the large scale collection of marine organisms or disturbance of ecosystems, thereby restricting the level of research activity at the field station over the years; and WHEREAS, there has been a significant increase in the number of training and educational activities involving passive use of the natural resources adjacent to the field station that could effectively be incorporated into the work of VIERS; and WHEREAS, the Virgin Islands National Park administration has expressed high levels of support for the field station being used more for environmental education and training than for general research; and WHEREAS, a name change that will not exclude research as a valuable activity at the field station, but will put the University in a position to promote a more accurate picture of the current activities taking place and encouraged at the station, is a reasonable and logical change; and WHEREAS, it is proposed that a change of the name of the field station to the Virgin islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS) meets the present condition of the University’s role and the field station’s role in today’s society as it facilitates the emphasis on environmental education and training. UNIVERSITY of the VIRGIN ISLANDS NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands hereby approves the change of name of the field station located at Lameshur Bay, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, from the Virgin Islands Ecological Research Station (VIERS), to the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS), effective this 28th day of June, 1992.
