dateline: UVI August 29, 2008, vol xiv, number 8 The monthly newsletter of The University of the Virgin Islands Events Calendar In the first-ever Secu- rity Department Promotion Ceremony, members of UVI’s St. Thomas campus Security Department were recognized for their pro- motion to the ranks of cap- tain and sergeant. UVI ad- ministrators and staff, fam- ily and friends, joined the promotees at the cer- emony held July 31, at the St. Thomas campus Sports and Fitness Center. “Ladies and gentle- men, you should know this is history. In the years I have been here, this is a first,” Captain John Payne said, opening the ceremony. He assured the UVI community that members of the security team will serve at the highest level. UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster said that there are challenges in securing open campuses across the nation, including UVI’s two campuses. The University and the mem- bers of the Security De- partments must meet those challenges, she said. “We’ve been given the re- sponsibility of taking care of people’s children, their spouses, sisters, brothers and loved ones,” Dr. Ragster said. “I support what you do,” she added. “Each and every one of you has my appreciation.” In light of more bold and defiant perpetrators, the responsibilities of se- curity officer have increased, said UVI Chief of Security Elvin Fahie. “We who are charged with keeping you safe must work even harder,” he said. While most people are asleep, Chief Fahie said he is busy thinking of ways to keep the campuses safe. Musah recalled a time when a se- curity officer alerted him around 11 p.m. one night that the windows of his vehicle were down.
