Spanish and French are widely spoken in the Caribbean and internationally. In fact, Spanish is spoken by approximately 500 million people, while French is spoken in five continents. The Modern Languages Area offers a Professional Spanish Certificate and a Spanish Minor. Professional Spanish Certificate. The Professional Spanish Certificate is designed for students who wish to work in the medical field, law enforcement, first responders, hospitality, and other businesses. The Professional Spanish Certificate will prepare students in acquiring the necessary language and intercultural skills needed to communicate with French or Spanish speaking populations. Speaking a second language can give us an edge when applying for a job in this ever more interconnected society, and a better appreciation of different cultures. The requirements for the Professional Spanish Certificate consist of the following courses. A total of 13 credits is required for the Certificate: A. Mandatory Spanish Courses: Prerequisite(s) Credits SPA 231 Intermediate Spanish SPA 132 4 SPA 305 Oral Spanish or SPA 306 Advanced Conversation Any 200-level SPA course 3 B. Any one 300- or 400- level course in Spanish 3 C. One elective course from the following: MGT 439 International Business Management ACC 202, MKT 301 MGT 301, DSC 430 3 MKT 422 International Marketing MKT 301 3 COMN 225 Intercultural Communication COM 119 3 CJU 222 Law Enforcement-Community Relations none 3 Any course transferred from Spanish Immersion Program from UVI Study Abroad 3 Minor in Spanish. The Minor in Spanish requires a total of 18 credits in addition to the Introductory Language courses. After fulfilling the requirements for SPA 131, SPA 132 and SPA 231, students must complete (with a C or higher) 18 credits from the following list: A. Mandatory Spanish Courses: Prerequisite(s) Credits SPA 305 Oral Spanish or SPA 306 Advanced Conversation Any 200-level SPA course 3 SPA 321 Studies in Spanish Language and Style Any 200-level SPA course 3 B. Any four (4) 300- or 400- level courses in Spanish* *One of the following may substitute one (1) of the four (4) mandatory 300- or 400- level courses: MGT 439 International Business Management ACC 202, MKT 301 3 MGT 301, DSC 430 MKT 422 International Marketing MKT 301 3 COMN 225 Intercultural Communication COM 119 3 CJU 222 Law Enforcement-Community Relations none 3 Any course transferred from Spanish Immersion Program from UVI Study Abroad 3 General Education Requirements. Does the Modern Language Area have an Honor Society? Yes, the University of the Virgin Islands is a member of Alpha Mu Gamma. The first and largest national collegiate foreign language honor society of the United States, and its Territories. Alpha Mu Gamma recognizes exceptional achievements in all foreign languages. Mu Pi is the local chapter at the University of the Virgin Islands. What foreign language courses fulfil the requirement for the Bachelor of Art? You need 3 semesters of a foreign language, either French or Spanish. What foreign language courses fulfil the requirement for the Bachelor of Business Administration? You need 2 semesters of a foreign language, either French or Spanish. What foreign language courses fulfil the requirement for the Bachelor of Fine Arts? You need 3 semesters of a foreign language, either French or Spanish. Are foreign languages required for a Bachelor of Science? Students registered for the Bachelor of Science can fulfill the General Education requirements by completing 18 credits in the humanities, including courses in theatre, music, art, and a foreign language. Specific courses are required by some degree programs. What is the WebCape Assessment exam? Before registering for their first foreign language course, students who have already studied French or Spanish, take the WebCape placement exam to determine the course that best corresponds to their level of proficiency. If the student is placed in a higher-level course and passes the course with the grade of a “C” or higher, he/she will receive 4 credits for the higher-level course, and 4 retroactive credits for each course initially placed out of when taking the exam. Do I have to take Introductory Language courses, or can I test out of them? You can take the CLEP exam and test out of the Introductory Language courses. If I take the CLEP, how many foreign language courses can I test out of, and how many credits would I get? The minimum test score to receive 8 credits for French 131, 132 or Spanish 131, 132 is 45 points. The minimum test score to receive 12 credits for French 131, 132, 231 or Spanish 131, 132, 231 is 50 points. Who do I contact to take the CLEP exam? The CLEP exam is administered by the Center for Excellence in Leadership and Learning (CELL). After taking the WebCape placement exam, students are placed into the Spanish or French course that best corresponds to their level of proficiency. For example, if a student places into in Spanish 231 and then takes SPA 231 and receives a final grade of “C” or above, the student receives credit for SPA 231, and retroactive credit for SPA 131 and 132.
