The sittings of the Distriet Court shall be held at the town of Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas, and in the towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted in St. Croix. : SPECIAL TERMS. he Judge of the Distriet Court is au- thorized and directed to hold such special terms of the Distriect Court as may be necessary for the public welfare. or for the dispatch of business of the court in each sub-judicial district, as he may deem necessary NOTICE. At least twenty days’ notice shall be given by the Judge or the Ollerk of the District Court, of the time and piace of holding the several general and special terms of the District Court. JUDGE OF THE_ DISTRICT COURT. Section 5. —There shall be appointed a judge for the District Court, who shall hold office for a period of twn years, and who shall be eligible for reappointment. ; SALARY. The salary of the District Judge shall ke francs twenty-four thousand per yvear or the equivalent ,thereof in such currency as may be legal tender. SALARY OF DISTRICT JUDGE; How PAID. The salary of the Distriet Judee shall be paid in equal shares from the respec- tive Municipal Treasuries of the sMunici- palities of St. Thomas and St. John and St. Croix. DUTIES. : The duties of the District Judge are such as are provided in the Ordinances, Acts, ('odes. Laws and Decrees in force in the Virgin Islands of the United States. : DisTricT COURT COMMISSIONER PRo- VIDED. : Sectinn 6 —There shall be appointed by the Governor a District Court Com- missioner in and for the Municipality of St. Croix, provided that no person who has power to issue a warrant of arrest shall be appointed such Commissioner. PowERS AND DUTIES OF COMMISSIONER. The District Court Commissione® shall ‘have power to act, under the supervision of the Judge c¢f the District €ourt, in all probate, guardianship, bankruptey and insolvency matters and may periorm a:l the duties and exerecise all the powers imposed or conferred upon the District Judge in probate, guardianship, bank- ruptey ana insolvencey matters. SAME. The District Court Commissioner shall also have power to grant writs of habeas corpus for the purpoese of inquiring into the cause of iestraint of liberty; tem- porary restraining orders; and writs of arrest in civil causes; writs of attachment including attachments in admiralty; pro- vided, however, all such writs and or- ders shall be returnable to the District Court Judge and like proceedimgs shali be bad thereon, as if the same had been granted by the District Court Judge in the first instance. The Commissioner may diso review all applications and orders for bail that may be reviewable by the District Court. COMPENSATION. The Distriet Court Commissioner shall retain as compensation the fees earned by his office. CLERK OF THE DISTRICT COURT. Section 7. Upon recommendation of the Judge of the Distriet Court there shali be appointed by the Governor a Clerk of the District Court. DEPUTY CLERKS AND OFFICERS OF COURT PROVIDED. Section 8. —The Judge of the District Court, with the approval of the Governor,: may .appoint such dep :ty eclerks of the Distriet Court as from time to time may be deemed necessary fcr the dispatch of such business as may come before the Distriet Court and such officers as may ‘be necessary. CLERK EXECUTIVE OF DISTRICT COURT. Section 9.—The Clerk of the District Court is the executive of the said court and shall receive an annual salary not exceeding francs fifteen thousand or the equivalent thereof in such currency as may be legal tender. His salary shall be defrayed in equsl s:ares by the re- spective Municipalities of the Virgin Islands.
