CROIX STA LION London; Oct. 18th.—Disorders occur- ved in Whitehall this afternoon during a demonstration by une nployed men who ,had sent a delegation to Mr. Lloyd George in Downing Street. Several persons were injured in an atiempt o break through a police cordon, and cthers were hurt when some stone work from a win dow on the treasury building fell. The situation which developed in Whitehall at the entrance to Downing Street was an ugly one. There were a thousand of the unemployed me¢n awaiting the retun of their delegation and the great thor oughfare of Whitenall in the vicinity was jammed. The disorder started when the unemployed demonstrators tried to break through the heavy police guard, and get into Downing street. [t was during this rush that the window stones from the Treasury Building crashed down. Police rzinforcements were rushed up " ahd mounted police were called out to as- sist the regulars. At least two o the po- liee and several civilians were injured in the eariy attempts of the crowd to get through ihe cordon. Finally the crowd began to throw stones. The parapet on one side »f Downing Street also collapsed during the rush. A number of persons were injured when a crowd headed by a red flag of the Tottenham distriet social- ists and lzbour party made a determined rash and tried to break through the po- lice. Eventually the red flag was cap- tured. The deputation to the Premier consisted ,of fifteen heads of London * Bureaus asking for relief for the un- employed. Disorders were still pro- ceeding when the deputation emerged from :he Premier’s official residence CHRISTIANSTED V. 1 U.. 8A; 3;.0&?%&\’ at 10 Downing Streei, and quieted the crowd. At this time a small party of demonstrators went to the neigh- bouring ‘lrafalgar Square and set up a red flag and sang the National and cheered the lenine and Trotzkv. No trouble develuped here, however, the police not interfering. Tlhe police fin- ally dispersed the rioters. In connec- tion with the sending of the deputation to the Premier, a parade of 10,000 unem pioyed had been planned to march to Downing Street as a demonstration. Af- ter the disorders had subsided the parade of the unemployed reformed and contin ved towar s Trafalgar Square in an or- derly manner, and escorted by the po- iice. Fifty injured persons were giJen treatment when the trouble ended. Twenty of ihese were sent to hespitals, In conneciion with the: character of the demonstration, it is pointed out that the appearance of the red flag here may not necessarily have been ol particular sig- nificance. N Notice To Road Holders. HE general annual repairs of the Pub- lic Roads in Bt. Croix, with Bridges. Barge Walls, Culverts, Hand Rails, Water courses, ete. ete., shall commence (according to Par. 13 of the Road Ordin- ance of 9th June 18R84) in the month of Octeber and be completed for the general Inspection in January month. Special attention must be given ip re- pairing to use good materials and to keep the roadway uniform and even. with a good crown so as to shoot off the water quickly., and the trenches must be dug out well, with sufficzient width ¢nd depth to take away quickly the water from heavy rains and same time not be dan gerous to publie traffic. The cocoanut, and other trees, along the roadsides must be kept trimmed so as not to be an i‘nconvenience to the Automobites and Vehicles using the roads. All ruts and holes must be kept filled and in order.
