GOVERNMENT OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS OF THE UNITED STATES ST. THOMAS. BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS OF THE UNITED STATES. w A Proclamation. Thanksgiving Day. HE President of the United States having designated Thursday, the thirtieth day of November as a day of national thanksgiving, supplication and devotion, I, HENRY H. HOUGH. Gov- ecnor of the Virgin Islands of the United States of America do earnestly recom- mend that the people of these islands gather at their family a'tars and in their houses of worship on that day to render thanks to God for the bounties they have enjoyed and to petition that these may be continued and increcsed in the yes 2 before us. In the beginning of our countr tue custom was establi~thed by th- devout fathers of observin; ‘"«anuall" a day of thanksgiving for the . "w.ues and pro- tection which Divine Providence had ex- tended throuzhout the year and it is eminently fitting that-the custom should be perpetuated. { ! No country and no people are witho ¢t their trials and tribulations,’no coun’ y and no people are without the bountics and protection of the Divine power,-—let usi " on this day of Thanksgiving seek only , emember the laftter. Let each heart ve scarched, for the benefits and blessings received at the hands of the Almighty and for these let us lift up our hearts in an appropriate expression of appreciation and gratitude. The terrors of war have passed us by and we are living at peace with the world at large, we have been spared the destrue- tion due to hurricanes, earthquakes, and tidal waves, the devactation due to pesti- lence, plagues, epidemiecs and serious illnesses, we have had neither drought nor famine, we have been blessed with the protection of law and order. We are a Ged-loving pecple, religioasly inelined, living in a spirit of amity and brotherly love. Let us therefore celebrate this day of Thanksgiving as sincerely as did the originators of the custom when it was first established.
