THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR GOVERNMENT HOUSE Charlotte Amalie, V.I. 00802 340-774-0001 PROBLEM GAMBLING AWARENESS MONTH RHEAKKRHKKEKRKREKKKAKKKKKKKKKE BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS OF THE UNITED STATES KREKKHKEKEKEKRERHKKKKKEKKEKKEEKR A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the gambling industry in the United States Virgin Islands significantly contributes to the local economy and the quality of life of our residents by creating hundreds of jobs in the public and private sectors, generating tax revenues used to support our schools, hospitals and health care facilities, and a host of other vital programs; and WHEREAS, problem gambling, as opposed to responsible gambling, is a public health issue affecting millions of Americans of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds and has societal and economic costs to individuals, families, businesses, and communities in the U.S. Virgin Islands; and WHEREAS, problem gambling is defined as all gambling behavior patterns that compromise, disrupt, or damage personal, family, or vocational pursuits; and WHEREAS, problem gambling is treatable with therapy, medication, self-help groups, and treatment is effective in minimizing the adverse effects of problem gambling; and WHEREAS, the Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission has taken the lead in the U.S. Virgin Islands to combat problem gambling through public service announcements, consumer education tools and resources, development and funding of counselor training, and other activities; and WHEREAS, the National Council on Problem Gambling has designated March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month, and 2023 will be the 20th anniversary year of promoting public awareness, prevention, and recovery services related to problem gambling; and WHEREAS, the Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission invites its partners, gambling and gaming establishments, public health organizations, treatment providers, advocacy groups, and other key stakeholders to join in raising awareness and promoting treatment for problem gambling and for all residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands to participate in Problem Gambling Awareness Month.
