A professor of law at Northeastern Univer- sity School of Law, Dr. Hall has had a career as an administrator in the law school and the uni- versity. He was appointed provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at Northeastern University in July of 1998 and served in that capacity until July 2002. Dr. Hall held the positions of associate dean of Academic Affairs and later dean of Northeastern’s law school and had previously been a tenured pro- fessor at the law schools of the University of Mis- sissippi and the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Hall holds both a doctorate of juridical science and LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School, a J.D. and M.A. from the University of Oklahoma and a B.A. from Kansas State Univer- sity. “He is eminently qualifi ed for the position,” Board Chair Alexander Moorhead said. “He has a deep Board of Trustees Selects New UVI President See New President on Next Page Carice Glasgow Makes History as Miss UVI I n a history-making pageant, UVI sopho- more Carice Glasgow was crowned Miss UVI 2009-2010 at the Miss UVI Ambassa- dorial Competition held on March 28, on the St. Croix campus. Glasgow’s win marked the fi rst time that a student enrolled on the St. Croix campus won the Miss UVI title. She also walked away with the titles of Miss Photogenic, Miss Intellect, Best Performing Talent, Best Ambassadorial Presentation and Best Evening Wear. “Right now I think I’m still in a state of shock,” Glasgow said two days after the com- petition. Glasgow explained that her preparation for the pageant began late, because of other commitments – in- cluding being a resident assistant in the dorms and her course load of 18 credit hours. She attributed much of her success to her coach Jamal Drummond. Being relaxed during the competition also paid off for Glasgow. “For some reason on Saturday, I was really calm,” Glasgow said. “In the end it worked out well.” Glasgow will serve as an ambassador for UVI – par- ticipating in UVI’s recruitment efforts and being visible in the UVI and general community. She will receive a scholarship that covers full tuition for the Spring and Fall semesters, a Mary Kay gift basket, two round-trip tickets on Seaborne Airlines, a two-night stay at Marriott French- man’s Reef and Morning Star Beach Resort, a $100 gift certifi cate to the UVI Bookstore and a gift certifi cate to Indulgence Spa. A computer science major, Glasgow is also a member of the Psychology Club, Math Boosters, the Travel Club and the UVI Bucs Dance Squad. The competition’s fi rst runner up was- JaeDee Caines. The second runner up was- Christina Clement, who also won the titles of Most Popular and Miss Congeniality. A standing-room only crowd attended the pageant at the Cafetorium on UVI’s St. Croix campus. He said he embraces the University’s fi rst value – “Stu- dents First.” “I believe in my heart I have what UVI needs,” Dr. Hall said. UVI has the potential to move forward to the next level, he added. “You only get to that next level through sound management and inspirational leader- ship.” Leadership is very different from management and involves creating a sense of vision and mission, he said. Leaders should not overlook the work of employees. “You don’t work for me, but we work together,” he said at the meeting. “Each one of us has the same desire to be an equal part of the institution.” Dr. Hall will meet challenges. Staff in attendance at the Jan. 28 meeting said their number one concern was compensation. Other concerns from staff included mo- rale, staff empowerment, shared governance and increased and improved resources. In January, Dr. Hall and Dr. Calvin Jamison, the other fi nalist for president, met with students, faculty, staff and alumni on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The presidential search was conducted by a 15-mem- ber Search Committee appointed by the UVI Board of Trustees. Isaacson Miller, a national executive search fi rm, was retained by the Board to assist the Search Committee in recruiting and screening candidates for the position.
