The financial situation is expected to be | more keenly felt from today when prices in general are to be increased 234, or for | the sake of easier calculation 25% on ac- count of the reent rise in the U:S. dollar. While there may be grounds. why some merchants should increase their prices at orce, we can see no good reason why those whose remittances are being m:de throcugh the National Bank at the old rate of 5% should not observe the old prices until they actually have to contend with the increased rate. The National Bank which is an Institu- tion very well known for its leniency and readiness to help the publi¢ makes a special concession in the interest of the people that all drafts payable through the Bank and accepted ' before the 15th. instant will be payable at the rate of 5%. No fresh stock of goods has been received here since the 15th. and if such business men as contemplate enjoy- ing the 5% privilege should still put up their prices, it would seem that the Bank is warranted in cancelling the arrange- ment with thiem, and we hear that this will be done. ; Those v7ho are in these days eriticizing the Bank or the Government nét ‘know- ing who is responsible for the present condition of things should bear in mind that we are far from being thoroughly informed on all phases of this moment- ous question. We hope to be able to gather enough to help furnish a general understanding of the subject. We learn that Mr. Johannes Larsen, formerly connected with the Apothecary businesses in this ‘island has obtaired a concession for the Farsg Apothecary busi- ness in Aalborg Amt, Denmark. The Government of the Virgin Islands has indeed shewn a noble spirit in deal- ing with its employees during this finan- cial crisis when the difference in ex- change which would otherwise have been a dead loss to them, is being made good by the Government. ; Mr. Svendsen has advertised a serial for tonight.
