THE Invitations sent out for a meeting at Midland on Saturday night, and which is likely to be introduced in a sim- ilar way in both towns, has nothing to do with any part of the work of the Vir- gin Is'ands Protective League, neither is It In anyway connected with the pro- posed meeting as suggested in my article READ and THINK. SUGAR REGULATIONS. 1 THE Food Commission at its meeting 5 today sized the prices of Sugar as fol- | lows: : Wholesale Retail | Sugar, brown erysial 9ec. Ilec. ' Sugar, <«lear crystal ICec. 12¢. Sugar, washed erystal Ilc. 13c. | Wholesale dealers are directed to put sugar on the market, immediately, at thé | above prices. In the event that this is not done the Food Comrmission hereby serves notice that ic will take over the en- - tire stock of Sugar in St. Thomas, at in- voice prices, as provided by Section 6 of ' Qrdinance of 7 Ottober 1918, reading as follov’s : “It shall have power to take over the stock of any or all merchants, deal- | ers, producers or growers who do not act in the manner prescribed.by the commission by paying them the rea- sonable value thereof, bhut ctocks of . merchants ‘who sell at prices and in ' quantities and to personsin thiema: ner determined by the commission shall not be taken over. In case ‘any dealer or producer - whose srock is ' " taken over shall cbject to the value determined by the commission, his stock may nevertheless he taken over, out he shall have the right to appe:l to the Court or the district in which his busines< is located within ten : days after he is notifed of the value k assessed and in such case the value of : such stock shall be determined by the Court after both parties have been | given an opportunity to be heard.” 't he Food Commission rules that ‘re- tail’””means the sale in quantitics of one pound or more; aud that ‘‘wholesale’’ means the sale of one or more bags. No retailer may refuse to sell sugar in one pound lots. , ‘ It is recuested that the Food Commnis- sion be promptly notified, in writing, of any refusal c¢n the part of zny one to sell at prices fixed above. Now it should be apparent to any thirking persson that if sugar can be sold at 9, I¢, 11, 12, and 13 cen's a pound in £t. Thomas where ro sugar is prodiced, and where its im- por.ation must necessarily be attended with exvenses for freight, landing, and if it be foreign sugar, also im- port duty, which exvnenses are wholly ex- cludedin St. Croix this bteing the place where the article used here is manu- factured, then it take: some brains :o reason out the St. Croix Food Commis- sion’s method of caleulation when fixing the retail price .of sugar and that of the b orest quality namely raw sugar at 16e. apound #nd failing to quote any wholesale prices whatsoever. It looks like making tun at thie people to do this sort of thing - and with reference to other commuuica- tions on the same subject pablished in your paper, the seilers ought to be ex- cused in not dhering'to the prices rul:d by the Food Commission for probably they are not raken sericusly. You will also read in 2 recent issue of St: Tlo- mas Mail Notes that Mr. Lockhsrt : wiil open additiona; stores for the retsil- ing of sugar at the above mentionad prices. Why. it will pay the people here to send to St. Thomas to buy sugar!
