Size of Ship and Shallowness of Harbor | iiade her Second Departure Difficuit. 7 Pulled off of the roeks of Leper Island l last Friday morning wiith apparently lit- | tl> damage. the transport Northern Pa- } cific sailed Sunday night a little more | tnan one week delayed by having run ! aground on Sunday aiternoon, May 9. :| The transport had considerable difficul- l ty in getting out ot the harbour and al- | though she left her dock a few minutes | after 6 o’clock, it was after dark Sunday | night before she steamed past Kl Morro | and out to sea. : % Because of his experience a week be- ! fore, Captain Lustie was extremely carz- | ful in getting his ship.out of the barbor. | The ship is larger thao the usual type | that visits this pcrt and because of her | extreme length and draft and the shal- | lowness of portions of the harbor, it was | very difficult for her to maneuver and | get into the channel. Another handicap | which probably causei as much trouble | as the size of the ship itself is the fact | that the ship has a remarkably high free | board which makes her subject to the | control of the wind except when under | fair speed. i It was this drifting while moving a | a slow speed that caused the ship to go | on the rocks. ; So far as known, the transport on her | second departure from the harbor carried | all the passengers who were aboard the | previous Sunday, including Generai Per- | shing and his staff, Governor Yager and { Mrs. Yager, the Resident Commissioner ' and Mrs. Cordova Davila and probably 45 other passengers from San Juan in ' addition to the passengers and troops in | transit. i Instead of sailing direct for New York, | the transport first stopped at Saint Thom- | as where, she took on fuel oil. Just what damage was done to the ship t while she was on the rocks was not sta- l ted here but it is believed that she suf- fered hittle by her five-days on the reef ‘ at Leper lsland, ; This is due largely to the fact that the | sea was calm during all that fime and | the fact that every effort was made to keep the ship in position to prevent any movement on the rocks which might tend THE ST. The exact extent of the damages done will yrobably be de- termined in New York after the arriva of the transport there but the fact that the ship was permitted to proceed on her journey is perhaps the best evidence that she was not seriously damaged. No verificalic 1 was obtainable here of reports that Capt. Lustie might be cour! martialled as a result of the shipgoing on the rocks.—Porto Rico Progress.
