From an | interesting extract of .an old estate’s | letter book in Moatsareat, a copy of which has been forwarded so the Im- | peral Commissioner of Agricuiture, it | appears that in that island a variety | of cotton known as sugar loaf was considered at the time tobe the best for cultivation under local conditions. In 1862, from samples sent to Lanca- | shire “or examination, the lint was val- ged at from 2.s 2d. to 2. s. 4d. perb., | and was pronounced to be equal to any American cotton except Sea Island. U.S. A., FRIDAY 26tH NOVEMBER 1920, num for every man, woman, and child in the Jommonwealth Hitherto the price of sugar has been lower in Australia than elsewhere in the Empire, owing to the produgtion from its own sugar- cane plantatidns. Consequent on the recent sharp rise i1 the price of sugar vigorous efforts are now being made in Victoria and Western Australia with a view to suppiementing the cane-sugar industry of Queensland and New South Wales by putting extensive areas un der sugar beet (United Empire, Au- gust 1920.) -Ind. Tne yield of wheal in the United States is estimated at 101,130,000 quarters for 1920. of 14 per cent less than in 1919, and2 per cent helow the average pro- duection of the five previous years. In Canada the y eld is estimated at 37,690, 000 guarters ot 50 per cent greater than in 1919, but only 18 per cent above the five years average. Other cereal crops, barley, oats and rye, are also favoura bly reported on as likely to be higher tha: th2 average. This is good news with regarl to the world’s food supply.
