Larson Elementary St. Croix, USVI ABOUT THE "SAMMY INITIATIVE" The 2011 National Safe Boating Week, Sammy the Sea Otter™Coloring Contest was created by U.S. Coast Guard Seventh District, Office of Recreational Boating Safety Specialist Bruce R. Wright. It was designed to provide teachers across the U.S. Coast Guard Seventh District with an opportunity to engage their students in lessons regarding endangered species, environmental concerns, water safety and safe boating. As part of this contest, students were encouraged to research the habitat and behavior of the sea otter, just one of several endangered species. The contest was open to students in kindergarten through sixth grade throughout the U.S. Coast Guard Seventh District, which includes the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Winning entries were edited to create colorable images and text. …

Although outlines were enhanced for reprinting and the puzzles added, what you see is the actual artwork and messages of the kids of the Seventh Coast Guard District. The end result is Help It! Protect It! Save It! An Activity Book by kids for kids. A very special "Thank You" to: CDR Donald Winfield and CW02 Ursula Walthers for your support of this project. She said to the boy: "When you go out on the water you should wear a life jacket, and when you ride in a boat stay in your seat/' Then the boy asked: "Why do we keep the ocean clean?"
