Sandy Hook, July 21st.-—Resolute came back today afier two straight def=ats and won over the Sha:aroek. Shamrock finisned a scant naif boat lengih ahead with a lead of 19 seconds, but as she had oained perceptibly at the start the same advantage, the race was miraculouslv in yachting events a dead heat over the thirty mile course. Resolute won by the amount of her handicap, 7 minuies and one second. The fourth race of the series will be started Friday. [t was areal yacht race frorm the start and it proved a finish rivalling in cioseness that of a neck and neck horse race. Resolute had taken the lead early in her favourite fifteen mile beat to windward and rounding the stake with about a quarter of a mile lead, slipped swirtly down the wind with spinnaker and balloon jib, topsail billow- ing superbly. But Shamrock would not be denied and slowly but steadily ran up in the intervening distance until with little more than a mile to go her bowsprit reach then slowly began to creep past the Resolute’s stern. Inch by iich Sham- rock moved up and up. A mile from the stake they werz running neck by neck. The Resolute cauzht a tiny extra puff of wind somewhere and crept up slowly almost inperceptibly. She got her bow about even with the Shamrock’s tow- ering mast when a puff of steam from the Committee boat’s whistle regis- tered the Shamrock’s finish. But the finish did not prove ail the thrills of the race. The Shamrock jockey- ing for position seemed to have ob- tained the advantage on a starboard tack in the weather berth. Resolute offered littie opposition electing to wait for the port r2ck which came within CHRISTIANSTED. V.l. U.S. A., MONDAY 26TH JULY 1920. a few minutes Here she took the wind- ward berth and pointed high up into the wind. Capt Burton turned Shamrock’s nose further in toward the Jersey shore and the two sioops travelling on diver ging paths soon were nearly a half mile apart. Superficially Shamrock appear- ed to have the advantage. But final- ly when Shamrock tacked about two miles off the Jersey snore ‘Capt. Adains sirategy was proved. He held Reso- lute on her course and the. yachts begun to converge. It was a question which wou'd have the weather berth when they met but Resolute gained it by a scant 100 yards. Then ensued an exciting series of sharp tacks in which Sham- rock tried to cross Resolute’s bow. But it was Resolute’s game and each time ‘apt. Adams swuug her over she had drawn a lirtle furcher ahead of her rival. Capt. Burton feinted twice to bring Shamrock about until her sails fAapped and iben swinging her back on the ovigin:l tack, but he lost on the manaeuvre for Capt. Adams refused to be tricked. Finally Resolute gained a point where Capt. Adams felt he could make the mark on one long reach and the defender turned er tail on Sham- rock and scudded away. Shamrock quickly forsook her short tacks and gave chase. She gained slightlv on the reach but Resolute beat her to the mark by two minutes and four seconds, made a close turn to windwagd and broke out her great wind catchers with surprising rapidity. Shamrock’s turn was a bit wider and she was slower bre._king out her spinnaker and ballooners and when she did get them out there was a gap of daylight between them. Resolute held her own on the home stretch un- til Shamrock filled this gap with a lit- tle jib sail. This seemed to help her im- mediately and she begun to close up the interval until she passed the defen- der. It was a straight away slide down to the finish with Shamrock getting the better wind astern, the breeze soften- ing as the yachts ran along. ‘Half way to the finish Shamrock had cut Reso- lute’s lead in half, three miles from the finish it had been brought to two hun- dred yards and a hdlf mile from the lightship the two yachts were sailing side by side. The Shamrock passed the Resolute t¢ lcewardi -and soon siipped ahead and dashed for the line reaching in 19 seconds before the Resolute. As this was exactly her lead at the start the two vachts were found to be on even terms, beat for boat., unigue in the his tory of cup races Resolute on her tine o). 170: ~ allowance of seven minutes and one sec- ond used it to win by that margin so the series tonight stands 2 to1l in the favor of the Shamrock. As the vachts crossed the line the Committee asked their skippers whether they wished to race tomorrow and both replied in the negative. The next race therefore wiil be held on Friday. Summary. Reso- lute start 1.00.41 finished 5.03.47 elapsed time. Shamrock start 1.00.22 finished ~ 5.03.21. Resolute elapsed time 4.03.06. - Resolute wins by seven minutes and one ~ second, corrected time. Klapsea time ~ on legs. Resolute first leg 24.40, second - leg 1.38.26. Shamrock first 2.26.44 sec- ond 1.36.22. New York, July 21st.—For the first time in the history of the yacht races for the America’s Cup the challenger is a ~ betting favourite. Last night the odds shifted to Shamrock following her show- . ing in yesterday’s race ana she IS DOW ~ regarded as s2ven to five betting prop- ~osition to win. Indications are that there ~ will be plenty of money behind the Lip- ton beat today.
