He declared that the men representing the Dail, who would be responsible for taking over control of the Irish administration, should get a fair chance in every county, what mat- tered most was public order and he appealed (o the other side to appoint a joint committee of both sides to carry on the government. This was greeted with cheers. Mr. Collins declared that Presi- dent De Valera held the same place in his heart as ever. Then followeda violent speech by Mary Maec Swiney, denounc ine the resuit as worse than the betrayal of Ireland in the days of Castlereagh. Viscount Castlereagh, Marquis of Lon- donderry, who was Chief Secretary for Ireland ir 1798, was instrumental in carrying the union in 1800. Mr. De Valera rose again, supposedly to reply to Mr. Collins overture. However he took notice to them and merely appealed to all his own supporters in the Dail to meet him in-the Mansion House today at one o’clock. This evidently hurt Mr. Collins very much, but he quietly said, ““if the visiole presence of myself and colleagues is so distasteful, they might at any rate be some zccommodation be- tween the parties for the purpose of public order’’, Minister Burgess immedi- ately retorted, “'I will take care that the discipline of e arny is preserved’”.
