STANDARD III - DESIGN & DELIVERY OF THE STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCE Dr. Glenn Metts, Associate Professor of Management, has established meeting dates as of October 5th, 2015; every other week on Mondays in the UVI St. Thomas library conference room from 12 pm to 1pm. STANDARD IV - SUPPORT OF THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE Please welcome Ms. Patricia Towal, Director, Counseling and Career Services on the Albert A. Sheen Campus, as the new Co-Chair of Standard IV. When asked to serve in this capacity by Dr. Stephen Moore she agreed to aid in the University’s reaccreditation important process. In all activities, whether internal or external, an institution must be faithful to its mission, honor its contracts and commitments, adhere to its policies, and represent itself truthfully. CHAIRPERSON Nandi Sékou, Esq. is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and led the development and implementation of the Criminal Justice program at UVI. She is presently the Chairman/President of the Virgin Islands Board of Education and by virtue of this appointment also serves as a member of the UVI Board of Trustees. As a Native Virgin Islander, educator, attorney and activist, she is committed to the transformation of public education in the Virgin Islands. CHARGE The Ethics and Integrity Subcommittee will examine University ethics and integrity as a cornerstone to building trust by the faculty, staff, students and constituents in the University. This analysis should start with Management Value 3: Uncompromised Integrity and review and analyze how it has been institutionalized as a management value. The University must have clearly defined and articulated codes of conduct for faculty, staff and students that are equitable, just and fair. The University’s documents, administration, practices and procedures should exemplify the holistic qualities that are expected to be imparted upon our students to ensure their success. Prof. Nandi Sékou Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Greetings Committee Chairs and Co-Chairs, I am sure that your committee work is moving at a satisfactory pace. By now you should be well on your way with documenting the progress and challenges faced by your Subcommittee. As you work on your annotated outlines, which are due on November 23, 2015, I want to remind you of some overall considerations in the development of Subcommittee documents. Please ensure that you include a glossary of all acronyms used in your Subcommittee report. Further, each acronym used should be spelled out in the first instance in which it appears in your report. Additionally, please keep in mind the following formatting guidelines as you develop your documents: Use Microsoft Word 2013; Use Calisto MT font size 11 for the body of reports; Set document margins at 1” around; Use single space. In developing the University’s Self-Study Report, our goal is to develop a high quality report that embodies the following: A crisp, active voice; Consistency of style and voice; Consistency of information across reports, with respect to how the University – to include its students, staff, programs and services – is characterized; and, Cohesiveness, clarity, and focus. Dr. Noreen Michael, Editor 3 Dr. Noreen Michael Research Director by Dr. Noreen Michael 4 Institutional Assessment plays an integral role in strategic planning, institutional research and effectiveness, outcomes, and ultimately accreditation. The goal of Institutional Assessment is to lead and support a systematic review of the institutional mission, goals, and outcomes, using ongoing research-based planning and evaluation, which will result in continuous improvement in institutional quality. Institutional Assessment will also guide the process of effectively accomplishing UVI’s mission according to the strategic plan, Pathways to Greatness, and accreditation standards. Assisting Institutional Assessment accomplish its mission are the following departments: Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) Student Learning Outcomes Accreditation and Memberships Institutional Research and Planning (IRP) Institutional Effectiveness (IE) UVINext Taskforce Strategic Planning Online (SPOL) News Bulletin 5 ASSUMPTIONS ON ASSESSMENT Assessment is an ongoing process that integrates into every aspect of the university, a climate of program enhancement from academic programs and student life to better serve the larger community. Assessment results are used to improve and maintain the integration of planning, evaluation, and review processes as they relate to the development of academic, student support and administrative support programs. Findings from the systematic assessment process create a basis for decisions about budget and resource allocation. Assessment will be an ongoing process to identify program effectiveness and priority needs necessary for successful achievement of the mission, goals, and objectives. Assessment within each academic unit is an ongoing process that emphasizes overall program effectiveness and the development of student learning outcomes related to the subject matter specialty inclusive of human, ethical and professional values. Assessment in support units is a continuous process that emphasizes the provision of quality services that are effective and efficient to meet the needs of a diverse student population and other internal and external constituents. The effective planning and budgeting process depends on input from every level of the University, and incorporates internal and external parameters and assumptions, that are designed to benefit the students and support their learning outcomes. The use of the latest technology will be used to facilitate the planning, budgeting and evaluation process. News Bulletin Cont’d STANDARD IV - SUPPORT OF THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE, CONT’D... Dr. Stephen Moore, Executive Director of Student Success/Honors Program, is also excited to welcome Ms. Nathalie Roumou, Administrative Assistant III - School of Education, as the new Standard IV Sub- Committee Administrative Support as Ms. Ikysha James is no longer available to serve in this capacity. Additionally, Dr. Moore and Dr. Metts have decided there will be a collaborative approach between Standard IV and Standard III due to the crossover of information between the two (2) Standards. For information on Standard IV, Dr. Moore can be reached at (340) 693-1582. STANDARD V - EDUCATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS ASSESSMENT Presently, there are no updates for this subcommittee. STANDARD VI - PLANNING RESOURCES & INSTITUTIONAL IMPROVEMENT The Sub-Committee has decided to meet every two weeks. For details of location, day and time, please call Dr. Adam Parr, Associate Professor of Mathematics, at (340) 693-1333. In addition, Dr. Parr is also seeking Stu- dent representation, preferably through the Student Government Association (SGA), but volunteers are welcomed as well. STANDARD VII - GOVERNANCE, LEADER- SHIP AND ADMINISTRATION Mrs. Judith Rogers, Director of Libraries, is seeking Student representation, preferably through the Student Government Association (SGA), but volunteers are welcomed as well. When the relocation is complete, the new space will be able to accommodate the same number of classes at once like at the Market Place. Chelsea Osborne is from Maryland and earned her MLS from University of Maryland, College Park right before moving to St. Croix, VI. She has a diverse library background that includes working in the Special Collections at the University of Maryland, the libraries at Montgomery College, the Virgin Island Public Libraries, as well as interning at the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art. She is very excited about being a part of the Information and Technology Services team. Freshmen open your orientation packets, and get involved!
