The Islands of St. Thomas and St. John together with surrounding islets, rocks, cays, ete. (2). All that part of the Island of Sf. Croix now known and defined for jadi- cial purposes as Christiansted jurisdic- tion. (3). The Salvation Army which has been busy in their good work, and needs not our feeble ecommendation, added to the enjoyment of a goodiy crowd lasi nizht at the Apollo Theatre, where Major William Joy exhibited pictures and lec- tures interspercedly on the Life of Christ. Several favourite Sacred Songs ~ were thrown on the screen and heartily sung by the throng. Suen revivals carry it an amount of impressiveness, and in these times of chaos and discontent serve to soothe and cheer many troubled hearts. L.ondon, June 15th, -The first definite returns issued today on the baliot of the . miners on the new proposals of the own- -~ ers, which it had been hoped would show . the majority of the men favouring imme- diate settlement and a resumption of . work, jindicate a strong feeling among ' the men against dropping the claims of their executive for a national wages pool! and the callinz of the strike. Constantinople, June 17th—The Greek offensive against the Turkish Nationalist has been halted, while the decision of the British to help the Greeks financially 1s pending. In any case, however, the Greeks are expected 1o launeh a local of- fensive of Ushak where the Turks are badly placed. This offensive would be ordered for the purpose of maintaining the prestige of King Constantine. London, June 17th. —The Lloyd George candidate was defeated in the bye-elec- tion today when Rear Admiral Sueter, running on an anti-waste ticket was e'ected for the Hertford constituency. Admiral Sueter, independent, 12,324. Sir H. Carlyle, coalition unionist, 5,553. Fontainbleau, June I%th.—Miss Cecil Leiteh, British Woman’s Golf Champion today defeated Miss Joyce Withered, al- so of England, in the final of the French wornen’s open golf championship tour- nament, by 6 up and 5 to play. New York, June 17th.—The raw su- gar market was unchanged at 4.00 for centrifugals, with sales of 40,000 bags of Porto Rico’s at that level. Ottawa, June 17th.—The trade agree- ment between Canala and the Nest In- dies, provided by statute during the re- cent cessions of Parliament, c¢ome into force on June 18th. by virtue of a pro- clamation contained in this week’s Ga- zette. London, June 17th.—The two-thirds majority required for continuance of the coal stoppage was exceeded by more than 20,000 votes. This came as a com- plete surprise to all those concerned. No decision relative to the next move of the miners could be reached at a lengthy conference of the executive of miners federation tonight, and an adjournment was taken autil tomorow. The chief dif- ficulty facing the miners officials is the fact that the govt. time limit within which the state grant of £10,000.000 must ce accepted, expires tomorrow. hey have shown reluctance to lose this grant and apparently hope to induce the govt and mineowners to reopen the negotia- tions.
