A very fine evening made up of beauti- ful pictures, well screened, and accom- panied with the usua! charming music was afforded the patrons of St. Mary’s Hall at the show there last nig: t. L,a Princesse Rural School w:ss the scene of attraction last Saturday Aoprii 29th when nearly sixiy public school teachers and their friends met for a teachers’ conference with a view to furth- er the teaching of agriculture. The Assistant Director of Education opened the meeting 2nd complimented] the teachers for the excellent showing they had made in the recent teachers, ex- aminations. He counselled those who had failed to not be discouraged but to let their defeat be an incentive for in- creased efforts for improvement. Dr. Thompson of the Experiment Sta- tion spoke of the history of the teaching of agriculture in tne United States. He informed his hearers that Abraham Lin- coln was the first to sign the bill creating Agricultural Colleges. It was many years after that time, however, before these colleges actually began to funetion and was only within recent times that the teaching of agriculture has been in- troduced into the elementary schools. Dr. Thompson told of the splendid results obtained by the American Government in Florida, California, Hawaii, Guam and the Philippines, that they- had their be- cinning tie same as we under difficulijeg and that they succeeded in establishing a hign type of eivilization largely through their werk in agriculture Mr. Quinones the Supervisor of Agri- culture tor the public schools cutlined the work in the schools and presented the teachers with mimeographed lessons to be used for the balance of this year. The presence of nearly sixty persons to this meeting speaks well for the intey- est taken in this new phase of sehool work., We will wateh with interest its development. PROCEEDINGS o THE : FOR ST. Government Secretary (Gaffney) re- marked: Mr. Chairman.
