Through a landmark publishing collaboration , the University of the Virgin Islands’ The Caribbean Writer and the Reichhold Center for the Arts recently launched an important new anthology of Caribbean drama. Students, faculty and members of the public gathered to mark the launching of Contemporary Drama of the Carib- bean at a ceremony on Dec. 3 at the UVI Student Center on St. Croix. Edited by Erika Waters, editor of The Caribbean Writer, and David Edgecombe, director of the Reichhold Center, the anthology features works by Edgecombe, including his introduction , “Always Make Sure They Pay You,” and his play, “Kirnon’s Kingdom.” Students enacted a scene from “Kirnon’s Kingdom.” at the launching. Contemporary Drama also includes “War,” by Cecil A. “Blazer” Williams (St. Vincent) and “Black Woman’s Tale” by Jean Small (Ja- maica), both of which originally appeared in The Caribbean Writer. Other plays are “Triptych” by Kendel Hippolyte (St. Lucia) and “No Seeds in Babylon” by by Ian Gregory Strachan (the Bahamas). “Bellywoman Bangarang,” by the Sistren Theatre Collective, is a rarely published play, which details the lives of women in Jamaica. The Sistren Collective was formed in 1977 by a group of women from Kingston, with the help of the Jamaica School of Drama. The women explored their experiences though drama, and their efforts evolved into a professional theater group. “Anyone who is interested in Caribbean literature or who has ever taught Caribbean drama knows how difficult it is to find these plays,” Dr. Waters remarked. The Virgin Islands Council on the Arts provided major funding for the project. Contemporary Drama of the Caribbean will be on sale at UVI bookstores on both islands, at Dockside Bookshop, Amazon.com, other local bookstores, and from TheCaribbeanWriter.com.
