DeGraff, Marvin A. Blyden and Donna A. Frett-Gregory Be it enacted by the Legislature of the Virgin Islands: 1 SECTION 1. Section 11 of Act No. 6570 as amended by section 3 of Act No. 6595 and 2 sections 2 and 3 of Act No. 6635 is repealed. 3 SECTION 2. Title 20 Virgin Islands Code is amended as follows: 4 (a) Chapter 31, section 101 is amended as follows: 5 (1) In the definition of “automobile for hire” insert “a surrey or” after 6 “means”; 7 (2) By striking “motor vehicles operated as motor busses or passenger- 8 carrying trucks subject to regulation under the provisions of chapter 1, Title 30 of 9 this code nor”; 10 (3) In the definition of “passenger for hire” by inserting “or a surrey” after 11 “vehicle” where it first appears; and 12 2 (4) By inserting the following definitions in their respective alphabetical 1 order: 2 “safari” means a truck that has been modified to carry not more than 27 3 passengers. 4 “surrey” means a light, four-wheeled carriage type means of 5 transportation with or without a top which transports four or more persons.” 6 (b) Chapter 33 is amended in section 339, subsection (e) by inserting “surrey or” 7 after “operates a”. 8 (c) Chapter 37 is amended in section 403, subsection (b) by striking “truck” and 9 inserting “safari, surrey”; by striking “Taxicab Commission” and inserting “Bureau of 10 Motor Vehicles”; by inserting the following sentence after the second sentence: 11 “However, the carrying capacity of a safari may not be more than 27 passengers.” and by 12 striking “under this subsection”. 13 BILL SUMMARY 14 This bill repeals section 11 of Act No. 6570, as amended by section 3 of Act No. 6595 15 and sections 2 and 3 of Act No. 6635 that relates to the inspection and licensing of surreys, 16 safaris, and tour buses and amends title 20 Virgin Islands Code, chapters 31, 33, and 37 17 providing for the inspection and licensing of surreys, safaris, and tour buses by the Bureau of 18 Motor Vehicles and the Taxicab Commission, respectively. 19 BR23-0813/January 24, 2024/SLR 20
