EDITORIAL, In this issu¢ there appears a letter from - Mr. Tutein on the subject of whether or not prices of raw fish should be lowered. Os course, he, as a fisher- man, says they vught not to be reduced. We decline o be draws inte a war of words, and would merely emphasize that what was published in the Avis of the 18th inst., was based on public sentiment, and if it becomes necessary to argue the matter out, those interested should stick to facts and logic, and not alone as to whether the prices of all lines of st R kN goods should be cheaper. It is a fact that those dependent on the fishing in- dustry for a living must buy a large . percentage of imported foodstuffs, and it was chiefly in order to heip the fish . ing element meet the high cost of liv- ing in this respect that an increase was allowed in the price of raw fish. It is logical that now the prices of import- ed foodstuffs are reduced the warrant for this increase declines accordingly. It is only too true that many things in the dry goods and hardware lines are still far above what they used to be . worth, and this is particularly the case where printing paper is concerned; be- fore the war this article cost 24 cents a pound, and today it is 17 cents, or more " than 600% dearer; but who would favor ~a proportionate increase in subscription ~ rates? Notwithstanding what our cor- . respondent writes, hiwever, it is stat- ' ed that those in the fishing business declare theéy never made moure money ' than since the Food Commision fixed- . the current scale of prices. If such an . assertibn can be made, public opinion ' does not appear to be altogether wrong ' in looking to the Food Commission to ' take appropriate action now.
