I believeI hath | buried the dead long enough. It would" | seem as if the Commission is not vested * with any authority, beeause people go to the cemetery and take away the dirt and | bones of the dead. If thatis soit | is a disgrace to our flag. ! 3rd Member for Christiansted Town | (Alexander) remarked: Mr. Chairman. | As far as | know the atiention of an | Honorakle member of the Councii has | been drawn to the iact that the cemetery , is too smali, and if the death rate con- | tinues as high as it is today a money bill ; will have to be introduced in the Couneil 51 1y S to provide the necessary means for buy- Ing more land in which to bury the deal. As regards the bones found exposed that is due to the fr2t that bodies buried in recent years have been dug up 2nd Ap vinted Member ( Voll) remark- ed: Mr, Chairman. [ believe there is a rule made as regards interment. 1 be- lieve twenty years is the time limit. Suf- ficient time is not allowed for the bones to decay. That’s a matter that svould be hrought to the a:tention of the Coun- cil. That’s a resuit of the Commissin not having fuil control over the ceme- teries. The Chairman vemarked: Ihave been a membher of the Cemeteries’ Commission for a number ofwyears. 'The reason wny the Commissio® is not functioning pro- perly is because Government has turned over control of the Cemeteries to the Public Works Department. However, the svstem of issuing permits to open graves still obtains. Regarding expendi- tures that is in the hands of the Puablic Works Departruent, and as rezards de- predations that is a ma ter for the police. 14 voiing tick.ts were handedin fors the election of 4 men to serve on the Cemeteries’ Commission, two for Chris- tiansted and two tor Frederiksted., One was Mank. Town (Abramson) with 7 votes, I'or Frederiksted: 20d Member for Frederiksted Town (Merwin) with 10 votes and Ist Appuinted Member (Coulter) with 7 votes. Do I understana you to say that the Public Works Deparrment is responsible for the spending of the money allotted to the cemeteries? The Chuirman: Yes. 4th Appointed Member [Blackwood] remarked: Then that departinent has to look after the cemeteries or the Commis- sion should intervene and see that the money allotted is spent properiy and care taken of the cemeteries. 4th Member f{or Christiansted Coun- try District | Ramsay| remarked: Mr. Chairman. Fuilowing up the remarks ¢t the Honorable 4th Appointed Member [ Blackwood] there seems to be no care taken ot the cemeoteries. Let us see if this matter cannot be settled ioday. It is a shame for us to think so little.of our dead. The dead should be betier pro- tected. Item G. Klection according to Ordinance of 17 January, 1908, Paragraph 6, of one member to enter the Becard of Management of the Asylum for Lep- L ers ete. 14 voting tickets were handed in. Elected was 2nd Member for Chiis tiansted Town [Canegata] with 13 votes. 3rd Member tor Frederiksied Country District [M. M. Skeoch] received 1 vote. Item 7. Election of2 men to take part with Government in deciding on ih- avpli- cation to be made of the Go den Wed- ding Legacy of their Maj-sties the King and Queen. Eiection of do. of the P. C. Yirch wile Rosailine Antoinette’s Legacy. The Chrirman remarked: Honorable Members it is the custom to take up these four items together and make one election of the same two men for the four legacies. To this arrangement the Council taciily agreed. i 6 voting tickets werc handed in. Elected were: For Christiansted: D. C. Canegata with 13 votes. For Frederiksted: [. Couiter with 11 votes. Item 8. Elention of Membors for the Com- mission pursuant to Paragraph 1 of Ordinance of 20:h Szptember, 1911, e Ty measures against diseases of entton piants.
