UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION PURPOSE: To approve the offering of the Associate of Arts in Inclusive Early Childhood Education to new cohorts whenever there is justified demand for the program. WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands through its Virgin Islands University Affiliated (VIUAP) program was awarded a grant in 1995 by the United States Department of Health and Human Services to train a cohort of Inclusive Early Childhood Education teachers, and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees at its June 1, 1996 meeting approved a new degree program leading to an Associate of Arts Degree in Inclusive Early Childhood Education to be offered to a single cohort of students after which the program would be terminated, and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees at its March 6, 1999 meeting approved the extension of the program to accommodate a second cohort of at least thirty students, and WHEREAS, the V. UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLUTION PURPOSE: To approve the offering of the Associate of Arts in Inclusive Early Childhood Education to new cohorts whenever there is justified demand for the program. WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands through its Virgin Islands University Affiliated (VIUAP) program was awarded a grant in 1995 by the United States Department of Health and Human Services to train a cohort of Inclusive Early Childhood Education teachers, and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees at its June 1, 1996 meeting approved a new degree program leading to an Associate of Arts Degree in Inclusive Early Childhood Education to be offered to a single cohort of students after which the program would be terminated, and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees at its March 6, 1999 meeting approved the extension of the program to accommodate a second cohort of at least thirty students, and WHEREAS, the V. I. Department of Human Services who oversees these preschool programs and daycare centers is very pleased by the positive changes that have been noticed among participants of the program, and WHEREAS, the new Federal mandate requires that fifty percent of all Head Start teachers must earn their associate degree by the year 2002, and WHEREAS, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Education, and owners of private preschool programs and day care centers are relying on the University of the Virgin Islands to fulfill the need for professional development of staff, and WHEREAS, the V.I. Department of Human Services and other agencies are willing to pay tuition and fees for persons who qualify to participate in the associate degree program, and WHEREAS, there is evidence that many Virgin Islanders are interested in pursuing an associate degree in this program and are willing to pay their tuition and related fees, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees approves the offering of the Associate of Arts in Inclusive Early Childhood Education to new cohorts whenever there is justified demand for the program.
