One example. A man died some .ne ago and | gave in- structions to th: Police to take over his belongings and awaitinstructions to sell so that I can turn the proceeds over to the Clerk of the District Court for transmis- sion to the relatives of the deceased man in Antigua, but as the law stands I can- not proceed with the sale of the articles. I récommend the adoption of the amend- ment to the Code. It was put to the vote and carried thtat ist Discussion be closed. Ist Discussion closed. With Government and the Council's consent 2nd Discussion opaned. No one requesting the word it was put to the vote and carried that 2nd discus- sion be closed. 2nd Discussion closed. With SGovernment and the CHuncil’s consent 3rd discussion opened. No nne requesting the word 3rd discas- sio.. closed, the Secretary read the Or- dinance in its correeted form and the Vice Cnairman put same to the vote, It was unanimously adopted. The Vice-Chairman remarked: 'The Ordinarce as corrected is adopted and goes to Government. The Vice -Chairman again brought up Colonial Council Bill No. 3 ard read the amend nent brought in by 2ud Memoer for Christiansted Town (Canegara). 2nd Member for Christiansted Town (Canegata) remacked: Mr. Vie:-Chair- man. The zalary of the Chairmman of the Road Commission is budgetted at Frs. 6,75). that was done when there was a 107 reduction in salaries. There may come a time when this 109 will ba given to the employees again. [ there- fore prepose this amsendment so thaio this posiiion may not be movre unfavorable than the other employees. The listrict Court has already taken some of these estates under summary proceedings and it is fair that we vote the measure. I#t Appointed Member (Coulter) re- ~kxad: Mr Viee-Chairman. As Sher- iff o1 the District Court I have in my No. 209: man. The Honorable Ist Member for Frederiksted Town is mistaken. The amendment reads ‘"The Chairman of the Road Commission shall not exceed Frs. 7.500.”” 1 can put down not to exceed $5,000, but that does not mean that he shall receive that amount. Ist Member for Frederiksted Town (Jackson): 1 will not vote for the amend- ment. Ist Appointed Member (Coulter) re- marked: Mr. Vice Chairman, As the salary stands if the Council decides to make a reduction of 1097 next vear it would be verv unfair to the Chairman of the Road Conniission. 2rd Member for Chiistiansted Town (Canegata remarked: Mr. Viee-Chair- man Suppose next vear the Colonial Council and the Municipal Committee find that the revenues increase and want to make a further reduction of 109 that would place the Chaiiman of the Road Commission in an unfaverable position. 4th Member for Frederiketed Count'y Distriet [Andersen] remarked: Mr. Vice-Chairman. I sece no reason for raicing the salary of the Chairman of the Road Commission from what it is in the old law. What has increased the work so enormously so as to warrant this inecreas2? 1 have heard no ar- gument justifying the increase. They have thoucht of tne Chairman of the Road Commission, but have not thougzht of the Road Inspectors. [ am certainly no in favor ofi iucreasing the salary of the Chai:man of the Road Com- ihissior and leaving the salaries of the lioad Inspectors as they are, 21.d. Member for Christiansted Town (Canegata) remarked: Mr. Vice-Chiir- man. 1 am sorry I have not got the original ordinance with me, however| will try to ex:lain, There are eight quarters on the island and the officers in each quarter received §3.00 per quarter, but later the work of thoese officers was transferred to the Chairman of the Road Commission and consequentiy his salary was increased to, 4th. Member for Frederiksted Country District (Andersen) remarked: Mr. Vice- Chairmean. That does not justify the matter. The eight officers did not do much work. Ido not see the enormous work the Chairman of the Road Commis- sion has to do which justifies the paying of such a high salary.
