Eat. --- Editorial --- While our island is far from back together, for most of us life returns to a normal rhythm. Not our previous rhythm. Get up, turn on the generator, brush, eat, listen to the disaster reports turn the generator off and go to work. I get ice most every day now. Structure is important. I park my car in the same place so that I can find it. Still it is easy to get caught up in a structure that is less than effective. A classic example relates to coping with stress. Many of us learned as children that it was effective, when being yelled at, to hunch down and grit our teeth. It works. A submissive posture tends to placate and gritting your teeth puts pressure on the middle ear which reduces its efficiency. But we tend to unconsciously associate an effective stress reduction strategy with all sources of stress. Hunching down and gritting teeth won’t help in traffic or a hurricane. Soon your shoulders are tense and teeth ground down. In the months to come, we will have many changes. It is important to review the structure of our lives after each change. I recall after Hugo, even after the power had returned, people who could not sleep without the sound of a generator. Next time your experiencing stress, review your coping strategy. Is it effective? Would other actions be more effective? Are some actions unnecessary? --- Restaurant & Retail Association --- Yesterday, I was not run off when I sat in on an informal meeting of the Restaurant and Retail association. Thanks for letting me stay. Your meeting is the reason that I’m writing this today. Talk about environmental change! Town is about to see massive resources and tourists like they have never seen before. The big guys on STT are already sniffing around for floor space. The big concern was will business continue as normal? Specifically we must avoid losing our atmosphere and traditions. Barkers, leaflets and such will make the place look cheap. STX should not become a “little STT.” But, if we are going to avoid this fate, either laws must be passed of all must agree. Perhaps our historical preservation society can step in here, as they have for store signs and such. There will be plenty of business for all. How about opening on Sunday? Personally, I think it should be an individual decision but agree that if only a few do it will look patchy. Most importantly, we must all contact our senators and governor. Now, as our environment changes, is the time to make policy that preserves our unique charm for the good of all. It was great to see the steel pan in the market square. How do we encourage more of that? What about street vendors, stop and think about it. Their overhead is minimal and in the environment to come they will make a lot of money. How will they be regulated; do you want one camped out in front of your store? --- We heard --- WAPA has minimal crews on line. What’s up with this guys? There is an old island cure for Mosquitoes in the cistern. Lee Morris central high school biologist suggest use of the local fish Gambusia but admits that guppies work just fine. CZM issued a stop work notice for the Seaplane docking area. No reason was given. I feel this is a classic example of the joke “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you.” The seaplane is one of the best things to come to these islands. It was fast, convenient and reliable. Its absence will hamper both recovery and normal business. --- Current Weather --- As of 5 AM Noel is 16.9 42.4 with 75 MPH winds moving at 8 knots NW. They expect even more North and are saying that it will probably hit no land at all. I’d feel better about the news if i knew it wasn’t the same folks making predictions about Marilyn. --- Talk About de Money --- If you don’t know about the FEMA teleregistration desk at (800) 462-9029, you must have been off planet. At some point you will be able to follow your application via the (800) 525-0321 but all they had was information about PR when I called today. Puerto Rico got hit? I did heard about a FMHA grant of $15,000 for persons over 62 and uninsured. I think the physical forms will get mailed. --- Breeze Info --- PC Paradise is acting as our center of communication. Voice is 773-9227, fax 773-9228. Call with corrections. Please copy and redistribute. I guess that about 1,500 people a day are reading us locally. Distribution is national and international. We hear some news services are reprinting parts of the Breeze. Thanks, that helps get the information out! This is not copyrighted but I would appreciate being indicated as the source. I’ve enjoyed doing these issues but feel a daily is no longer appropriate. The Breeze will return as needed. I would like to create some sort of fact sheet focusing on local business that gets a fax distribution. There is a marine sheet focusing on marine issues. Once things are bit more back to usual, reach me voice at (809) 692-4114, fax (809) 692-4115 or cbalch@uvi.edu. Love to all!
