The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (WMA) is due for a rate investigation every five years. The PSC has initiated a rate investigation for WMA to be conducted this year. This investigation aims to improve waste management services and address the financial challenges the authority faces. The rate investigation will be conducted in two parts, with solid waste disposal operations investigated first, followed by the sewage/wastewater operations later in the summer. The rate investigation process will involve public input and comment, along with a final report to the Commission from the hearing examiner on the matter. In recent news, the WMA has proposed a $360 annual fee for residences to cover waste collection, disposal, and maintenance costs. That proposal has not been formally filed and is expected to be reviewed in the rate investigation. An announcement from Waste Management on March 3rd regarding a rate increase on Trash Cart rentals has been rescinded pending compliance with the Ratepayers’ Bill of Rights and review by the Commission. The PSC and WMA will work closely together to introduce and approve reasonable rates that will fund these waste control and disposal efforts. The PSC emphasizes the importance of public participation in this process and welcomes community feedback on the proposed changes. Commissioners, Pedro Williams, David Hughes, Laura Nichols-Samms, Raymond Williams and Ex-officio member Senator Carla Joseph attended the meeting. Commissioner Clement Magras was absent. An Executive Session was held to discuss pending administrative and litigation matters, but no action was taken.
