Yesterday afternoon about 5 o’clock one of the most dirty acts of battery and cuttinyg took place on the road about Es- tate ‘"Prosperity’’. It is reported that one Lucille John while on her way into the village met a party of other giris ot her age winom she molested. This ocea- sioned a s*rimmage between her and one of her equal, Lucille then went into the villaz2 and her mo:ner, Mary Joan, went on the s+ene and commenced a series of stone throwing a- the girls which they in turn responded to. To make easy the situation Mary John took up a grass- knife belonging to one of the girls and grabbling Mary Plasket gave her a very serious cut on her left wrist. Puerto Rico cannot com- plete.—St. Thomas Bulletin, Sept 20th. We understand from very reliable source that the Rasporel Steamship Com- pany has decided to make St. Thomas a port of call. Already a steamer is ex- pe~ted bringing much cargo far this port. This line will no doubt give us two steamers per month. Cargo men will be taken "rom this pori at a better wage than was formerly paid by the Hamburg Americap Line. We hope the lahorers will remain in the island—With the inter-Ocean Line and the Emergency Fleet Corporation and other lines that we can imagine will' be established, St. Thomas will loom up once more.—lbid. TLEGRAMS ST..CROIX STATION, Washington, Sept. 23rd.—The Re- publicans took actual control of the Peace Treaty procedure. in the Senate today, by a three vote margin. The first test in the fight now being waged about the pact and its ‘cague of nations cove- nant came on a motion by Chairman Lodge of the Foieigrn Re'ations Com- mittee to postpong for one week the consideration of some forty odd amend ments which wculd relieve the Uni- tea States from service on Commis- sions created under the freaty. The formal motion with a fixed date was put before the Senate «fter the Vice- Pgesidenthad susiained a po:nt of order « by Senator Hitcheoek, leader of the Ad- 'ministration Forces, for ratidcation a '‘gainst a motion so- in efinite considera- tion, and it was revorted 43 to 40 and was accepted. The motion, rot of itself important, was accepted tonight by op- ponents of the leaglue as the best possi- ble index of the fe2iing and attitude of the Senate-toward the treaty and the covenant, democratic leaders declared it meant nothing. Washington, Sept. 23rd.—In this argu- ment on the subject of the possibility of the United States being outvoted in the Council of the 'League of Nations, Senatol Root todag'tstated that Canada, through Sir Robert Borden, asked an opinion as to her eligibility to the Council. He then.read the following letter t> Sir Rodert Borden, making the points clear: ‘‘The question hav- ing been raised as to the meaning of article four of the League of Nations Covenant, we have been requested by Sir Robert Borden to state, whether we concur in his view that upon the true constuction of the first and second paragraphs of that article, representa- tives of the self governing dominions of the British Eynpire may be elected, or named as menbers of the council. We have no hesitation in expressing our entire concurrence in this view. If there was any doubt it would be entirely re- moved by the faer that the articles are not subject to a narrow or technical ceon- structicn. Signed C. He added, ''ln view of this letter, which solemnly assures the Canadian Statesmen that the Dominions were so fully recognized as members of that, their representatives were eligible to seats on the council, though the Brit- ish Empire was already made a perma- tent member of that body, it would seem that argument ought to cease and that any contention, that the self governing deminions and colonies are not received as separate and independent entities with full right of membershir as inde- pendent States in each case, ought to be no longer heard. Rome, Sept. 19th-——Associated Press: “If you don’t rise, if you don’t over- throw the Govt. which dishonours, you are unworthy of calling yourselves Ita- lians’’. This deciaration is made by Ga- briel Dannunzio in a proclamation ad- dressed to Venice. The *Tribuna’’ stig- matizes the Dannunzio attempt to in- cite the people to rise, saying that this has caused condemnation even among Dannunzio’s supporters. In an appeal addressed to 'Trieste, Dannunzio says: “*We are determined to remain in Fiume in the face of apy opposition, to starve in its streets, t~ be buried under its ruins, burned alive in iis houses if set on fire, meeting with a smile the eruetesl death. Therefore we are invincible’’. Dannunzio urges that money and sup- plies be sent to Fiume. URSUANT to Ordinance of August P 19th 1874 it is hereby made known that I have received announcament tfrom Mr. LAUR NIELSEN that he, ac- cording to power vested in him by the joint stock Company "‘De danske Sukker- fabrikker’’, during his absence from St. Croix has empowered Mr. KNUD NIELSEN, Chief engineer, to sign the firm of the joint stock Company ‘‘St. Croix Sukkerfabrik’’ jointly with Director AXEL BERLAND.
