ERIK R. STAKEMANN. ST Mot o s i| K PROCEEDINGS OF THE FOR ST. CROIX. THE 6th Ordinary Meeting of the Col- onial Council for Si. Croix was held at 9.30 a. m.. Monday, Aprii 26, 1920 at the Council Hall in Christiansted. The following members were present: The Chairman (Merwin), A. J. Black- wood, D. Noll, A. E. Stakemann, F. Lunney, M. M. Skeoch, W.S. Abram- son, K. Henderson D. C. Canegata, W. L. Pentheny and F. Coulter. Member R. W. Skeoch sent in ex- cuse of his inability to attend. Further- more were absent, D.S. Armstrong, Thos. Ramsay, G. L. Fleming, G. Nordby, W. H. MacKay and F. Andersen. Despatehing Secretary (Commander Colby) attended the meeting. After pravers had veen said the Chair- man remarked: Hon. Members the min- utes of the last meeting have been duly published in the ‘‘St. Croix Avis’’ and if members have no objection to the min- utes as published same will be consider- ed tacitly adopted. There being no objection to the min- utes as published the Chairman deciared samc tacitly adopted. The Chairman further remarked in compliance with the Council’s vote at the last meeting1 have written a letter to Mr. Pierson Hamilton of New York thanking him for the portrait of his great grand-father, Alexander Hamilton which he generously gate to this island to be hung in the Council Hall. (The Chair- man read the letter) which is as follows: St. Croix, V. 1., 18 March 1920. Wm. Pierson Hamilton Esq., 23 Wall Street, New York. My dear Mr. Hamilton: The portrait that you have so gener- ously contributed 'to the Island of St. Croix was placed into my hands, by Rear Admiral Oman, Governor of the Virgin Islands, as Chairman of the egislative body of this Island for appropriate dis- position according to the wishes of the donor. In compliance I caused the portrait to be hung and presented through our Col- onial Counecil at a special meeting held on February 9, and fortunately the re- ceipt of the portrait was precedent of the meeting when the Council received the Congressional Committee from Wash- ington, sent to enquire into the econo- mic affairs - f this Island and a.l of whom as patriotic Americans were Keenly in- terested in the life and residence here of your most illusirous ancestor. The Council charged me to extend to you their most sincere thanks as well as on behalf of the inhabitants of St. Croix, for this your munificent gift, which is not only appreciated but wil! be revered as indicating a life of an exemplary char- acter and as one so closely associated with aur Island Lhome and who recejved his first aspirations here. I send you copies of the *‘St. Croix Axis’’of Feb. 28th, and March 6th.. con- taining an abbreviated report of meeting at which the presentation was made. My dear Mr. Merwin:— It is with great pleasure that I have just received your letter of the 13th of March advising me of the arrival and hanging of the portrait of my Great Grandfather, Alexander Hamilton, which 1 had -to preßent te the Government House of the Island of St. Croijx. Pray extend to the Council, of which you have the bonor to be Chairman. my full appreciation of their thanks for my gift I only hope that it will be my good fortune some day to be able to visit the Island of St. Croix, which I have long wanted to do. I also wish to thank you for the two copies of the ‘‘St. Croix' Avis’’ contain- ing a report of the meeting at which the presentation was made. My dear Mrs. Osporn: At a special meeting of the Colonial Council of St. Croix, held on Monday, 9th February, when the por- traf't of Alexander Hamilton was un- veiled, 1 was charged by the Council to write and extend to you the thanks of the Council and through them those of the inhabitants of St. Croix.
