In yesterday’s iss'ue space was given to a rather extensive réview of the Chris- tian :ted harbor question as contributed by one of the many at this end who ave the interest and welfare of their island home at heart, and who realize that most the advancement to which we lay claim in St. Croix lies in the solution of the bharbor problem at this end. It is much to be regretted that the efforts made tow. rd perfecting certain improve ments were abandoned without so much as to a further word from our local legislative which was the suitable chan- nel through wtich an appeal may have been made to the commission at Washing- ton. Yet it is not too late to take this matter up afresh and giving it the proper attention accomplish more than ever was dreamed of before, as our corres- pondent warrantably cons.ders. It has always been our opinion that the harbor at this end of the island could be made a suitable one without prejudicing the interests of Frecderiksted where there unfortunately seems to exist a misunder- standing of our aspirations. The pres- ent administration of these islands is believed to have the welfare of the populetion constantly before it, and chere is a strong conviction that our ap- peals for harbor facilities, even on a moderate scale will not be made in vain. Dear Sir:— The letter of Miss Hendrickson which appeared 1n the Emancipator, gives rise of an oppo:tunity for the public to know that my activities with the Virgin Island Protective League became dor- mant through her efforts to impugn my motives and gain favor upon the views she has expressed, and of whiech I re- fused to be a party. In my opinion the question of colcr should not be discussed on the islands. With a population over ninety percent of mostly eolor, where equal opportuni- ties are afforded to adopt cultuie and refinement and to acquire intelligence there is not the slightest chance of op- pressivn along the lines of race discrimi- nation. To Cdiscuss color and class, without creating a feeling of bitterness, is a very poor way to get JUSTICE for one and all, for the right of anyone to aspire . It is inconceivable that the writer (Miss Hendrickson) who spent [four months in the islands to makea study of these things cannot see that there is no comparison of race problem with that of the United States. : In Anerica with its ninety percent of whites, the question of RACE is raised and admitted even ip some of the courts. It is equally directed against the Jew and Japanese as against the Negro. Jews and .Japanese are united however and are independent. American Negroes are not. Besides Negroes here sow the seed of their own destruction.
