Oriol of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) invites the public to the next installment of the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums’ (DLAM) ongoing artist talk series, “Lunchtime with the Artist.” The third session will take place on Thursday, October 2nd, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Fort Frederik Museum. This engaging series features artists whose work is showcased in DLAM’s annual Emancipation art exhibition, “Tides of Freedom: Histories of Resistance from the USVI to the USA.” The upcoming talk will spotlight renowned Crucian 3D artist and sculptor Waldemar “Waldy” Brodhurst, celebrated for his inventive wire sculptures and use of found objects that explore themes of freedom and resilience. In honor of the 1878 Fireburn Uprising, Brodhurst will discuss how the legacy of the Fireburn Queens and other pivotal figures in Virgin Islands history have shaped his artistic journey and inspired his work. “Lunchtime with the Artist” will continue throughout the exhibition’s run, which concludes in late October. Each session offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from participating artists about their creative process, sources of inspiration, and how their work contributes to the broader narrative of emancipation in the Virgin Islands and beyond. Admission is $5, with free entry for students under 18, who are especially encouraged to attend and participate in the conversation.
