NEW CENTER: St. Croix received as a gift a new combination day care center and clinic from MODUFAB INCORPORATED. The center consists of three moduals with a total of 1300 feet and boasts some two rooms for clinic or day care purposes, a reception area, and complete bathroom facilities for boys and girls as well as a laboratory which may be used as a kitchen. The President of MODUFAB stated that the donation of the $25,000.00 facility is a token of the company’s appreciation for the acceptance of its homes by the people of the Virgin Islands. HESS OIL: Although no firm commitment, the president of Hess Oil, has indicated in talks with repre- sentatives of the Education Department of the Virgin tstands an interest in pursuing a joint effort in the YY operation of the Hess vocational training program located on St. Croix. The Commissioner of the Depart- ment of Education for the Virgin Islands stated that he feels a vocational and technical high school is urgently needed in the Virgin Islands and although this is not exactly what we need, it has the potential to augment the present programs until a full and complete vocational and technical training program is in- stituted. THE ARTS: The pride of all residents of St. Croix is the unique $400,000.00 Island Center pictured on the right. There’s an enclosed 600 seat area with an additional 1600 seats in the open. Many out- standing artists have performed here. Residents have had the opportu- nity to hear symphony, choirs such as the Vienna Boys, see ballet and local productions of drama and broadway musicals. Just recently one of the world’s great jazz artists Yusef Lateef entertained. A few years ago Victor Borge, who maintains a residence in Christiansted put on a benefit performance for the center that was a complete sell-out. ww ant quality. ductive. OLYMPICS: St. Croix is justly proud of Virgin Islander Ray Seales who represented the United States at the Olympic Games in Munich, Germany and won the only gold medal in boxing for the United States. Ray is a native of St. Croix. Ray’s mother was in the audience when he received the award. HOUSING: Under construction is Lorraine Village Apartments located in Grove Place, St. Croix, and built by US-Homes Communities Corporation and owned by Issac Hayes who composed and produced the music for the MGM motion picture “SHAFT”. These apartments consist of one, two, three and four bedrooms with rents starting at $130.00 per month including electricity and water. In three hours Harry consumed seventeen twelve o WOVN cans of Schlitz. The betting was heavy as to who would be the winner and it amounted to over $1000 Incidentally, Harry, a former marine holds the Congressional Medal of Honor. WATER RESEARCH: The College of the Virgin Islands has been designated by Governor Melvin H. Evans as the institution which will develop a Water Resources Research Center for the U.S. Virgin Islands under the terms of the Water Resources Research Act of 1964. The new Center will be eligible to receive federal support of $125,000 the first year, $200,000 during the second year and $250,000 each fiscal year there- after. Plans for the establishment are being formulated by the Caribbean Research Institute and officials of the College, working with the Department of the Interior.
